Answer is A. Between should be replaced.

A) but when
B) until then
C) in spite of
D) although

It may be the oldest.. but may not be the oldest at a particular time as its importance varies from time to time.. and also from country to country.. although fits in perfectly.

Most sand dunes are always in motion as wind pushes sand upward one side of each dune, over the top, and down the other side.

'upward on' would be better.

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.

Micheal,

Thank you for your explanation, now it is almost clear.

But in your examples you wrote
'we moved up'. and 'we moved upward(s)'.

are both right? what is the difference between them?

cyberagl,

In UK usage both would be right, but depending on the context, eg:

We moved up. Tends to imply moving to a higher place.

We moved upward(s). Tends to imply moving higher.
We moved in an upward direction. Same, but probably not in common use.

But:

We moved up the hill.
