Hiram Revels, the first black member of the united states senate, served as senator from mississippi, an office to which he was elected in 1870.
To understand this sentence, let's break it appart and write it fully: Hiram Revels served as senator from Mississippi =>MAIN CLAUSE which he was elected to in 1870 => ADJECTIVE CLAUSE When the VERB in an ADJECTIVE CLAUSE contains a necessary PREPOSITION (elected to, driven from, etc...) that PREPOSTION may be removed from the verb and placed before the ADJECTIVE CLAUSE CONNECTOR ("which" in this case), provided the OBJECT the PREPOSTION is refering to (in this case "an office") comes right before the ADJECTIVE CLAUSE CONNECTOR.
