Hi Everyone,
I have some questions of the TOEFL structure and written expression. 1) _________ the surface of metal, but also weakens it. A) Not only does rust corrode B) Not only rust corrodes C) Rust, which not only corrodes D) Rust not only corrodes The answer is D. I think A. is also correct according to the inversion rule. Which one is better if both A. and D. are grammatically correct? 2) [A river] usually [begins] [far up] in the mountains or [hill]. What is the meaning of far up? 3) Laser beams [can carry] long-distance signals [in way] [somewhat][ similar to] radio waves. 4) Langston Hughes always seemed to know [exactly who] he was, and [those knowledges] helped [make him] one of the [most respected] writers in the United States. Thank You. chaiyachoti Edited by - chaiyachoti on 2002 May 28 00:49:27 |

PERFECT!! I couldn't have said it better myself!
Nice job on that first question, Raghuveer. I've explained that question before, and it's kind of tricky... Hard to see at first. Excellent work!! Erin |

Just want to tell you that I changed the title of your post so that it'll be more informative for others; the name of this section is TOEFL Grammar, so we can already assume that all posts in this section will be TOEFL grammar questions. Erin |

Hi Raghuveer!
It's very kind for your clear explanation especially in the 1st question. Thank You. Hi Erin! I don't know the meaning of your sentence. -- I couldn't have said it better myself! -- chaiyachoti |

I can't say it better myself. (I can't do better than Raghuveer; Raghuveer did a job as good as I would do.) Now you get it? If so, it's the same thing, except my original sentence is in past tense!! Let me know, okay? I really want to know!! Erin Please post further questions here. Please search this newsgroup for FAQs. TestMagic.com San Francisco, CA USA |

It's just that this is pretty much a "fixed phrase," and it'd sound funny if we used "perfect grammar" to say this! Good question! Erin TestMagic help you before your test? Please remember to post after your test. Please? Please? |
