This is a great question, and a very common one!
First, we need to understand when to use infinitives (to do, to make, to want, to love, etc.): I want to go. Her desire to succeed was enormous. Second, we also need to understand when to use to as a preposition: I am dedicated to my family. Oxygen is essential to life on Earth. Third, we need to remember that a noun always follows a preposition. Fourth, we need to remember: gerund = noun Finally, we can plug in the gerunds in any place we had the nouns: I am dedicated to helping my family. Oxygen is essential to increasing the heat of a fire. Make sense??? Hope so! Please post back to let me know!! Erin Please post further questions here. Please search this newsgroup for FAQs. Hey there, Ricky. Posted the same question three times? Be sure to refresh your browser!! CTRL+R works great!
Examples of gerunds: running, sleeping, walking, talking, succeeding, thriving, loving, etc. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb, and it functions as a noun. So, you'll notice that the present participle and the gerund look the same, but have different functions. So when we say things like Sleeping is great. Running is good exercise. I enjoy succeeding at . we are using gerunds!! All of the words like this are nouns that come from verbs, don't you agree?? Make sense? Erin Please post further questions here.
