[The] should be dropped out.

Agree with Codename Gordon except:

[Prehistoric] villagers [tended to] work harder, suffer [from] more diseases and eat [a] poorer diet than nomadic hunters diet.

(Is there a typo here? The final word diet is not necessary and its use gives a strange sentence.)

I know the word diet is not necessary but this is a powerprep question and I just copy it here without a change.

OK. I asked because (although it doesn't matter as far as the answer is concerned) with that word right at the end the sentence is bad English.
