Heart "are" or "were"?

both sentences below make no difference to me:
"The students registered in this course are listed on that sheet of paper"

"The students registered in this course were listed on that sheet of paper"
The word "registered" and the word "listed" express past tense. I got the 1st sentence from my grammar workbook. However, by substituting "are" to "were" makes no difference to me.

can you tell me the difference?

thanks

slashlink,

Welcome to TM.

There is a distinction. To paraphrase:

'The students registered in this course are listed on that sheet of paper' = 'The names are on that sheet'. Statement of fact as to where the information can be found.

'The students registered in this course were listed on that sheet of paper' = 'The names were put on that sheet'. Description of where/how the names were recorded.
