the waters of what are now Maine and Massachusetts.

2 Long the world`s largest consumers of elephant tusks, Japan went along with a global ban on the ivory trade.

has explored => explored

Long => For/since long

fighted => fought

Hmm... these are "super-tricky" questions, not like the real TOEFL.

But here we go...

what are now => what is now
Yes, I agree with you here, but we also have ANOTHER major problem:

who has explored ==> who has explored

We most certainly need past tense here, NOT present perfect.

I think that the writer of this question was trying to dupe us with "what are," thinking that it was correct since TWO states replaced that area. However, "what" has no referent, and should not be plural.

Long => For/since long
Let's do this:

consumers ==> since Japan is singular.

Again, this is a "super-tricky" question, more along the lines of what we'd see on the GMAT, not on the TOEFL, since many people, including native speakers, would think this sentence is correct as written.

Raghuveer.
Nice button there, Raghuveer.

I don't recall ever seeing a question like this on the real TOEFL, but yes, "fighted" does not exist.
