Catalina
The Olympic torch _________ throughout the Games and is then extinguished at the closing ceremony. (A) burning (B) is burned (V) burned (D) burns According to answer key, D is correct. Why C is not correct while it provides more parallelism? baovan
Hi Catalina! "C" is incorrect because " burned" is a verb of the past tense. And as you said, we should use the parallel structure. "burns" ( present verb ) ,therefore, should be used.
Catalina
i'm really sorry for micorrect typing.:o my confusion is why answer (B) "is burned" is not the right answer .
Erin
B is a defensible answer, meaning there are really two conceivable answer choices, something the real TOEFL doesn't do. This happens on some of the TOEFL study guides because they do not undergo the same rigorous review that the TOEFL does.
