How to understand “to make it back in time”?

W: Oh really? So much for my excuse I guess I have to join you then.

How to understand “so much for m excuse”?
Anyone can help me? I'll appreciate it very much!

we shall order dessert, if we can finish it fast, that we can be in time for the lecture
to make it back in time= to be able to return bake in time

with this situation my excuse will be too much and unacceptable.
