a question from kaplan
Hi all,
I have come accross this question which is troubling me anyone plz let me the know the meaning of the conversation and the answer. It goes as such: (man) : I just ran into joe on my way to mike's apartments (women) : Oh, so he didn't graduate early after all A. Joe was behind in his class B. mike would no longer have the appartment C. That mike had run into joe earlier D. That joe would no longer be arround. |

I will also go with A. Since joe has not graduated, he is still going to be around. The problem with the A option is that in the conversation it says that joe wont be graduating early and the option A says that he is behind the class, so there seems to be a dichotomy over here...but that is the only option that makes some sense..

I would probably say D for the following reasons:
-It seems that meeting with Joe on the way to Mike's apartment is stg that is not expected as the phrasal verb "run into" implies. And the answer of the women seems to indicate that Joe was planning to graduate earlier than expected and therefore, he would no longer be around. However, he is there. That is my reasoning. I hope it helps. |

Hi k sandy25,
I see what you mean. Well, let's try to focus on what is implied by the woman's answer instead of the outcome. What I mean is that: It is obvious that no matter what the reason of it, joe did not prefer to graduate early. That is the outcome derived from the conversation. However, when we look at the reaction of the woman, it is seen that she was expecting the opposite of that (i.e. that he would no longer be there). Coolmay's reasoning is quite logical but as s/he has already stated, if A is the right answer then there appear a logical inconsistency. Because Joe is not behind the class, rather he has the chance of being in advance. I hope this clarifies your doubts. |
