Dear Madhavi,

Don't be so scared.

Nobody really reads all those and even if one does, he/she would most probably go insane.

That was just supposed to be a reference.

You can refer to it to find out the meaning of some idioms and phrases you come across .... let's say ..... while watching the TV, some hollywood films, news, or even practicing TOEFL listening comprehension.

If you have time, you can browse through the list and learn a few new ones. Mostly, you can pick out which ones are more probable to be commonly use than others.

You can leave out the less commonly used ones ... like (I suppose) ...

"the lights are on but nobody's home"
which means
"(somebody's) eyes are open but he's not all conscious (like daydreaming, lost in thought,..etc.,)"

HTH

Raghuveer

I came across the following idioms in some TOEFL practice tests (Which ones in particular, I don't quite remember). I couldn't find their meanings ...

"you can say that again ..."

"I hear you .."

Anybody, can tell me what they mean, exactly?

Raghuveer

Hi Raghuveer
I didn't hear any 'Idiom'so far.
Even if I hear I can't recognise them as idioms.I just
left thinking about the idioms.I may read 2 idioms a day.
I searched for the idioms you mentioned but i couldnot find.
How are the idioms useful for our score?
thank you
madhavi

I'm working on a list of important idioms, I'll try to see if there's any part that I can post here...

"I agree with you." I think the idea here is that if you say something once, and it bears repeating, the speaker agrees.

I always make fun of this idiom because I rarely, if ever, use it.

This one's very common. I means "I understand you."
