Practice Test 2, Question 3 (Part A, Section 1)

This is the tapescript:

M2: I thought Mary Ann would have a hard time getting used to college life.
M1: Were you ever wrong!
F2: What is learned from this conversation about Mary Ann?

(A) She adjusted to college life easily.
(B) It was hard for her to get into college.
(C) She no longer attends college.
(D) It doesn't take her long to get to campus.

I thought the answer is (B) (I think M1 agrees with M2) but I was wrong. The answer is (A).

However, I'm not sure about this type of question. So could you please explain this question and this type of questions for me? I will really appreciate that.

Good morning, Cinderella. I'm having breakfast right now, and I've got a class in an hour or so, so I can't give you the "full treatment" when I give you the explanation.

Essentially, we have inversion here to emphasize what we are saying. If you search for "inversion" in this forum and on my website, you'll see some good info.

Here are a couple of quick examples:

I am hungry.
++ Am I hungry!!
+++ Boy am I hungry!!

It is hot.
++ Is it hot!
+++ Boy is it hot today!!

I like pho.
++ Do I like pho!
+++ Boy do I like pho!!

Make sense now? Hope so. This question appears on the TOEFL from time to time, and is usually one of the most confusing for my students.

It's okay. What did you think was wrong with it? Sexist? Too strong?

I can't remember ever hearing "boy" on the real TOEFL, but I have heard "man" on the real TOEFL.

Yes, your answer gets me out of the troubles I have all the time with this type of questions.

But I still don't understand what "boy" means here, who is this "boy", the speaker or the listener???

P.S: What do you mean by "pho"??? Is it my favorite Vietnamese food :o ? Have you tried it yet?

"boy" is a simple interjection, something like "wow."

Pho is a kind of Vietnamese soup that is made with noodles, vegetables, and meat, but I guess you already knew that, right???

There are three pho restaurants within a block of TestMagic, so a lot of my students go there to eat pho. Also popular are Vietnamese sandwiches, but those restaurants are a bit farther away!

"boy," when it means "wow" is fine. But "boy" can also have its literal meaning, which some might find offensive.

I have another question.

Let's see... If we have a conversation like this:

M: This picture is beautiful.
W: Isn't it though!

In this case, the woman agrees with the man, right? Why??? (If the woman emphasizes that "It isn't though", then she doesn't agree with the man???)

this is the normal order and means she disagrees. (Although I have to say that this latter construction doesn't sound very good.
