I see that you're getting hung up on the same type of question. Oddly enough, we often use a negative statement in English to state something positive. For examples, native speakers of English might NOT say: You are smart!! (This one means that you are smart.) but we might say: Aren't you smart! (This one means that you are smart.) Compare this with: You are not smart. (This one means what it says.) This may seem strange, but I for one feel a bit awkward if I make such a statement directly, such as "You are pretty today!" For me, as a native speaker, I feel much more comfortable saying "Aren't you pretty today?" HTH!! ![]() Erin Has TestMagic helped you alot? Please help others as they have helped you. Please? I think, that in this case explanation could be a tag-question.
Look: That is just like Bob, isn't it? Look: Isn't that just like Bob? It is tag with some others words added. Just imagine the whole tag-question and meaning will be clear. But this practical rule doesn't fit for your previous example 'were you ever wrong'... HTH! HTIT (hope that is true)! Renata Edited by - Vaya on 2002 Aug 07 12:24:00 |
