uhcl,
I don't think there are *particular* meanings on the pheases in each bracket at all. If you look up dictionary, you can get it... For example, [main desk] is just "main desk". Nothing special. or...I can say "main counter" in other words. M. Is this where I get the books professor Ronald's [put on reserve]. W. Not as I known, but you might want to check the [main desk], [just in case]! What does the woman suggest the man do? A. Choose a diffrent book. B. Ask someone else to help him find the books. C. Try to reserve the books in advance. Ans. B. Woman said "you might want to check the main desk, just in case." It means something like : "I guess you would want to check the main desk, so that you might find what you're looking for." W. I saw you at the visiting scholar's lecture yesterday. I didn't know you are interesting in [behavior midification]. M. I am not but my psychology professor gives us six credits for going, and I really need it. What can be inferred about the man? A. He is not doing well in his psychology class. B. He needs information about behavior modification. C. He could not go to the lecture because he had too much work. Ans. A. Man said "Iam not". It means, "I am not interested in the lecture, behavior modification." Man also said "but psychology prof. gives us 6 credit for going, and I really need it", which means "but prof gives us 6 credit IF we take part in this lecture, and I really need this 6 credit." This whole sentence implys "he has to go to this lecture in order to get 6 credit to pass psychology class even if he is not interested in." Right? So he is not doing well psychology class and that's why he has to go. M. So you're taking sociology in the [independent-study course]. I guess you get more time for other classes. W. Well, you would think so. What does the woman imply? A. She is taking only one class this semester. B. Her sociology course is very time-consuming. C. She agrees with the man. D. The man should take an independent-study course. Ans. B. "Well, you would think so" means "Well, you would think I can spend more time for other classes, but actually NOT. (= I have to spend more time for sociology class.)" W. I really hate walking into class late; at least the professor didn't seem to notice! M. I am not so sure about that, she sounds a kind of angry to me! What does the man mean? A. The woman may have upset the professor. B. The woman got to class on time. C. He wishes the woman were not always late. D. The professor did not notice that the woman was late. Ans. A. Man said "she sounds a kind of of angry to me!". It means "Man felt she(=prof) gets angry ('cause prof. noticed the woman came to the class lately.) M. I just want to wish work in Dr. Cole's literature class. W. Really! I was begining to think that I was the only one. What does the woman mean? A. She thinks the course is easy. B. She has a lot of work to do. Ans. B. "Really!" means "Woman is glad to hear man wants to work, too." Woman was thinking she was the only one who deals with Dr. Cole's work. It implys "she has a lot of work to do and she wanted to get help from somebody." Hope it helps, ![]() Tmp |

![]() I don't know the functions of those words in brackets. What's the [main desk] for? But now I know there is a person over there for you to ask. Similarly to other words, but your answers is really clear so I can guess it myself. Thanks Tmp! |

Hi uhcl,
Well, English is not my native language, I'm not sure my interpretation of words in [bracket] is 100% correct or not... But let me use another words to express the words in brackets which you're not sure... [put on reserve] =(or nearly equall ) make a reservation.[just in case] = by any chance, a rare possibility [main desk] = main counter, reception desk etc. [behavior modification] = one lecture item in psycology [independent study course] = self-study course.(in this case, student doesn't have to attend the class and can study at home or anywhere.) Hope it more helps. ![]() Tmp |

Tmp,
It really helps, indeed. Thanks TMP. BTW, what does TMP stand for? In my field, tmp means temp standing for temporary. We usually delete these "tmp" files in few days. If you were, I hope I would not delete you ![]() |
