Longman Book

Memories of the villages were kept alive by descendants.

question:
The phrase "kept alive" is closest in meaning to
1) animated
2) maintained
3) endured
4) lodged

SPOILER: 2

I guess, it is closest to "maintained".

Maintain means that you make sure sth continues to exist ,you keep it alive .
Endure means that something lasts ,for example ''Bacterias are not enduring ; they are short lived .

I say that it is closest with "maintained". "Endure " has more to do with being painful, with bearing, or with suffering. In this sentence, the descendants simply maintained the memories of those villages throughout time. It has nothing to do with "endure ".

Maybe somebody has the book to give us the correct answer.
