Hii everybody….
![]() Please… I have a friend who is taking the TOEFL exam very soon… He asked me to explain why we should choose specific answers in some questions in the reading section… Since I couldn’t explain why we chose these answers, I thought of posting these two questions on this forum; hoping that some of you could explain the reason why we chose these answers specifically.. The passage is from Longman Book… Mini test 6 Thanks in advance ![]() Exxon Valdez Alyeska, a consortium of the seven oil companies working in Alaska’s North Slope fields, argued against such a land-based pipeline on the basis of the length of time that such a pipeline would take to construct and on the belief, or perhaps wishful thinking, that the probability of a tanker spill in the area was extremely low.Question 6: In paragraph 2, a consortium is most likely a) a board b) a leader c) an association d) a contract Correct answer: SPOILER: (C) Why we chose “an association”?? Why not “a contract”?? ![]() Though it was a massive spill, appropriate personnel and equipment available in a timely fashion could have reduced the damage considerably. Question 10: the word fashion in paragraph 3 could best be replaced by A- style B- direction C- hour D- manner Correct answer: SPOILER: (D) But I think both the manner and style are same. How could we recognize the correct answer? ![]() Thanks ![]()

1)It cant be a cotract ,because a contract cannot argue .It can express negative comments but it cant argue (or protest)
Consortium must be a word that means ''joining forces'' ,or sth that ''unites'' the seven oil companies . It cant be a leader ,or a board because each company has its own leader and a board.Basically ,ETS tries to make you pick the exact replacement of ''fashion'' while the words ''style'' will be out of context ''Timely manner'' is an expression that you should know. However ''manner'' and ''style'' are very close ,but keep in mind that ''style'' and ''fashion'' are very similar words. |
