The third section in the Toefl Test is the Reading Comprehension Section.
There are two types of questions in this section of the Toefl:
1. Vocabulary
2. Reading Comprehension
Begin with the vocabulary questions, continue with reading questions.Work quickly and efficiently in the vocabulary questions, and do not spend too much time on the vocabulary questions ,that you will have enough time to work slowly and carefully through the Reading section. In the Reading section you need more time because you have to read the text.
3.Never leave any questions blank on your test.Because you can go backin this section you can leave the general questions at the end when you have already understood what is the subject of the text.

Strategies for the vocabulary questions:

1. Work quickly through the Vocabulary Section. The questions progress from easy to difficult.
2. Do not look for grammatical clues to help you decide which vocabulary word goes in the blank. The Vocabulary Section does not test grammar.
3. Do not spend a lot of time looking for contextual clues to the meanings of the words. The context usually doesn't help you understand the meaning of the word.
4. be careful of secondary meaning of words. Words in English often have more than one meaning. The word"embrace," for example, has a primary meaning of "hug," but it can also mean "include".You must be aware that in the Vocabulary Section of the Toefl, the primary meaning of a word can be an incorrect answer and the secondary meaning of that word can be the correct answer.
Never leave any answers blank. Be sure to answer every question in the Vocabulary Section even if you do not know the meanings of the words.

Strategies for the Reading Passages

1. Skim the reading passage to determine the main idea and the overall organization of ideas in the passage. You do not need to understand every detail in each passage to answer the questions correctly. It is therefore a waste of time to read the passage with the intent of understanding every single detail before you try to answer the questions.
2. Look ahead at the questions to determine what types of questions you must answer. If you know the types of questions you must answer, you will know where to look in the passage to find the answers to the questions. Also if the question is no 1 or 2, you know to look at the beginning of the text, if the question is no 7/8 we know we have to look at the middle or the end of the text. It is important to check how many questions you have for that text and how many are totally, in order to know how to plan your time.
3. Find the section of the passage that deals with each question. If you understand the overall organization of ideas in the passage and you know what types of questions you must answer, you will know exactly where to look in the passage to find the correct answers. You can study the section of the passage that deals with each question thoroughly and carefully.
4. Choose the best answer to each question from the four choices listed in your test booklet. You can choose the best answer or answers according to what is given in the appropriate section of the passage, eliminate definitely wrong answers, and mark your guess on the answer sheet.
Looking ahead at readings
1. Recognize the Overall organization of a passage
- skim the passage for the main idea and the overall organization of details
- do not read each detail carefully, just look for the main idea and overall organization of details.
2. Recognize the different types of questions
- Questions about the whole passage
- Questions about part of the passage
Questions about the main idea, topic, subject or title are classified as directly answered in the passage in this classification system

A word to the wise... I think "shalom" means peace and is used as a greeting or farewell among Jewish people. As I understand it, it's similar to the "salaam" of Muslims.

I don't know the rest, but I suspect "Daniela" has written us something special in her signature. I'd like to find out what it is!!

As for the "Vocab Section," we must assume that this refers simply to Vocab questions. BTW, a bit of TOEFL trivia, before 1995, TOEFL had 30 vocab questions as part of the Reading Section. After 1995, they took them off and incorporated them into the reading passages.

Yes, Erin.

I just learnt from our "dstrauber" that her name is actually "Daniela". ( I was thinking his name was Shalom )

And "Shalom le chulamm" actually means "Hello to everyone"

But I'm not sure whether it means "peace" as you've mentioned.

For muslims (and all Indians, in Hindi) "salaam" means a form of "salute"
which is used as a greeting(of respect) when people meet one another.

Raghuveer.

You are really great guys !!!:o
As Erin said, "Shalom" means "Peace" and is similar to "Salaam" for the Muslims. It is used as well as greeting ,meaning "Hello". I have used it in the end of all my topic because it means also "Bye"as a form of "salute" in the end.But you both have right,it is a bit confusing.
And about the Vocabulary Section ,as Erin said I meant vocabulary questions. I just copied what was written in the book. It is true this is an old book. I thought that it might be helpfull.I'm sorry for the misunderstandings.

Yes, you should keep it! It's good for all of us to learn about you, your culture, and your language, and your unique signature makes you unique!!

You could do something like this (hit "Reply with Quote" to see the code for this):

Shalom le chulam ("Peace to everybody")
