Integrated Writing Question Experience Needed
Hey guys!
I have a question. In the integrated writing question. Some questions are sometimes asked like How does the information in the listening passage supplement the information in the reading passage? or How is the information in the listening passage related to the information in the reading passage? Those questions really confuse me. Do we need to match reading passage with the listening passage in every point? For example; Para1: First information from reading and how it is given in the listening. Para2: The same thing for point2 or is it also ok to do like that: Para1: summary of reading para2: summary of listening I feel so comfortable in the 2nd way. However, questions make me feel confused. I feel like I have to match points one by one. Is there anyone tried to 2nd way in the real toefl exam? |

Well ,I used the second model 2 days ago when I took the TOEFL .My essay looked like this :
INtroductory :In this set of materials , the reading passage argues against ... ,and the listening passage ,quite contrary ,asserts the view that ... The author of the reading passage gives various examples to support his point .First of all ,he states that ... Secondly ,he says that ... Further more ,the author asserts that ... In the listening passage ,the professor states that ... Firstly ,she says that ... Secondly ,she argues that ... Eventually ,the professor stresses that .. I think this response will bring me a total of 5.0 because it is well organized and structured ,and I used sophisticated vocabulary . |

I just review the writing part of the Official guide to tefl by ETS, it has the necessary to deal with the integrated part, and just prepared the day before the test for it, and the question was very similar to the example of the book, take a look of it.

I agree with Jin1 that we need to match between the reading and the listening during your intergrated writing. I have already checked in the Office Guide to Toefl ibt by ETS, and every high score writings are like the 1st template (above). The 2rd one looks like in Barron's Toefl ibt but I don't think it is perfect.

My English teacher told me that as long as you write all the information you need to ,it doesnt really matter what how are you spreading it.The task is usually to relate the listening passage to the reading one ,and sometimes the listening agrees or disagrees with the reading.However,it doesnt mattter if you are going to write about the R and the L in one paragraph ,or in separate.I personally think it is more organized to use the introductory paragraph to tell how the passages are related (agreement or disagreement) and the to write about the R in the second paragraph,and the L in the third one.It is just very organized

Hey ,anyone else ?
What do you think about the integrated essay ?Which way is better ? To write about point A from the reading ,and then Point A from the listening ,explaining how the two points are related IN ONE PARAGRAPH, then the same about point B ,in other paragraph ,and eventually point C in another paragraph, OR Write all the points from the reading in one paragraph,and then all points from the listening in another one ? Personally ,I think the first way is better because you not only summerize,but also tell how the points from the R and L are related. |

hi all
I think it would be (easier ) to just start with an introduction with 3 or 4 sentences ... then take the passage for example and summarize it in a separeate paragraph with the main points .. then in another paragraph you summarize the listening part with the main points that agree or contradict with those main points in the reading material .. in this way ...it would be more organized and much easier for you than thinking twice of how to join points from each part cheers |

Hi;
I think it is more correct if you do it the first way by relating the listening with the reading and if it contradicts or agrees point by point. Since the facts are given by points, you should elaborate each point by comparing the two informtaion, For me it is logical to do this, Ofcourse you give a short intro and then if you have time a short conclusion,. I felt i didn;t have that much time to edit it at the end, as 20 minutes flies like nothing ![]() |
