Dear Erin and Friends,
I have finished my TOEFL yesterday with the range score 187-250. This is my 2nd try. Listening: 24 Structure/Written: 8-27 Reading: 24 Total: 187-250 Expected Essay Score: 4-5 The score of my previous test: Listening: 21 Structure/Written: 5-25 Reading: 19 Total: 150-217 Essay: 3.5 Final: 190 Last time I typed my essay on computer and unfortunately I could not finish the last sentence of my essay. And I was not happy with my writing. I got 3.5. But this time, I feel better about my essay. I think my essay is well organized with more than 240 wards. I am not confident about language decoration. So I guess that my essay score will be minimum 4, maximum 5. But I like to believe that it will be 4.5. It is clear from my two range scores and one official final score that with 4, my final score will be 227 or 230 ( 250-187=63; 63/6=10.5; 187+10.5*4=229, the nearest CBT score is 227 or 230). In the same way with 4.5 the final score will be 233 or 237 (187+10.5*4.5=234.25, the nearest CBT score is 233 or 237). Erin, what do you think about this score analysis? I am writing to share my opinion with you and others. May be it will help other TOEFL takers to estimate their score. I need 220 for my first choice of university admission. Hope I have done with my TOEFL. Now I would like to tell you about stucture questions; for me those were really tricky. I do well in stucture, when I do not look at time and take more time than it is estimated. SO DEAR FRIEND, DO A LOT OF PRACTICES FOR GOOD STUCTURE SCORE. TIME IS A BIG MATTER FOR THIS SECTION. Thanks Erin, for your discussion forum. HAVE A GOOD SCORE TO ALL TOEFL TAKERS. M. Zahid |

Wow! What a beautiful post!!
Yes, you are right--the formula you used to calculate the score is the one I use; TOEFL doesn't release their precise scoring formula (even the people I've talked to at TOEFL say they're not exactly sure), but the one you used is pretty accurate. I think your essay score might be higher than you expect; TOEFL really cares more about what you say (your content) than how you say it (what you called "language decoration"). So it looks like you will probably get the 220 that you need, in which case, I'd like to say to you: CONGRATULATIONS!!!! So, you might not need TestMagic.com for a while. That's great! You know, in my business, I see a lot of great people, people I really, really like a lot, go off to school. In a very real sense, my job is to get people out of TestMagic as quickly as possible!! Sometimes I feel a little bit sad when these people I've come to know so well leave, but I always smile inside and after they leave because I know that they are happy and that they're on their way to reaching their goals. That makes me so, so, so happy!! So, drop by sometimes to say hi, and be sure to check us out in four years when you're preparing for the GRE or GMAT!! I sincerely wish you the best in all your future endeavors!! Erin |
