Question:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Nowadays, there has been a trend that universities and colleges are putting more money on sports and social activities, making they receive equal financial support as classes and libraries do. And some academic professors disapprove of this strategy because they can not get enough money as before. Further more, most of them believe learning in academic classes or reading in libraires are far more important and more beneficial than sports and social activities which may end up as an excuse of escaping from studying. However, sports and social activities, which seem to be useless, in my opinion, weigh the same as classes and libraries. And I have 3 reasons.
First, sports and social activities should receive equal financial support as classes and libraries do because getting enough exercises is the guarantee that one can work hard for a long time without being ill. As a popular saying goes in China:" our bodies guarantee our fighting". With no healthy body, one can not study well or even can not concentrate on it. For example, if one has a cold because of lack of exercises, he will spend a lot of time suffering from throat pain, which makes him less efficient.
Second, sports and social activities should receive equal financial support as classes and libraries do because by taking apart in social activities, students can not merely improve their academic knowledge, but gain much experience which they will never be able to get from textbooks. This can be proved true as many firms prefer to choose those who have working experience rather than the college students with no working experience. And it is because these firms confirm that such working experience can never be given by books.
Third, sports and social activities should receive equal financial support as classes and libraries do because we now need the employees who are well-rounded and versatile. We now live in a world that employers no longer satisfy with employees who only have one field of academic knowledge. With the rapid development of society and economy, employees with knowledge in various academic disciplines can not merely be more productive, but can help save a large amount of money for his firm.
In conclusion, sports and social activities should be viewed as same important and be given the same financial support. We all were taught to be a well-rounded people, and it will genuinely true only when universities and colleges give them the same emphasis.
