close relationship with their pets

Hi people,

What do you think of this essay?

Many people have a close relationship with their pets. They treat their birds, cats or other animals as members of their family. Whether such relationships are good or bad is a controversial question.

First of all, having an animal is a good way to cope with loneliness. Imagine the situation where some lonely old man comes home from work, and no one meets him at the door except for his dog. The dog is the only person who will listen to his grumbling and tolerate man’s mood swings.

But looking at the other side of the problem one may see that treating a pet like a family member is very dangerous, as it replaces human relationships. It is not only a way to cope with loneliness but also is an escape from reality and interpersonal conversation. Not pacified by a false sense of having family a bachelor might go out and find his spouse. But he has chosen sitting at home with his pet.

Many pet owners don’t have children, pets assuming the role of children’s substitute.

A pet is a good object to apply person’s need to care for someone. But too many extreme situations happen now, when people decide to have no children at all. I knew a woman in her thirties who got pregnant and choose an abortion, saying that she already had two children, meaning her two dogs. It was not that she could not afford to have a child, as she and her husband had well-paid jobs. Maybe she did not want to be responsible for a child or she did not want to spoil her figure. But if it was not for her dogs she might have a baby and did not have committed a big sin - abortion. And if she had a baby she would have less chance to end up in a senior home.

Therefore, treating a pet as a family member is not so good as it seems. Human-pet relationships are dangerous as they replace human-human relationships and make a defective family model.
