In my opinion, learning is a continued process ,people start learning from the birth to the death .In these days most of the science field start giving importance to the practical learning to their students. I also agree this, people should give importance to practical learning.
Firstly, take the example of any professional studies ,mostly all professional curriculum gives importance to lab hours .For example ,medical studies students should be attend the medical procedures in wards ,outpatient department and operation theater. Here if the students did not attend their practical classes one can't become a good doctor.
Secondly, all learning theories suggest that learning should be effective in those who had Practical exposure in their field. Because in practical learning multi sense are used for learning like touch, vision, and sound, this ultimately improve the better understanding of the subject.
(However?)Thirdly, in some areas it always not possible to learn through the practical experience .For example if astronaut student what to experience the zero gravity it not possible to go to the space and experience the zero gravity. In this case there is no option, only way is learn through the theory.((?This reason is not relative two reasons above ))
Finally, even in some areas people having good exposure of practical experience will perform better than one who learned only through theory. For example, a student can't learn how to drive only by reading books ;on the other hand another who learned the driving through practical experience not only can drive the car in better manner but also can able to answer all the traffic rules and regulation ,because the latter one learned the things through practical experience.
In the over view, i would say practical learning is all always better than learning the theory alone.
