Visa Renewal Suggestions
Hi!
I am from Europe and currently studying in the US. My F1 visa will expire in June 2010. I am going back home for the holidays and would like to use my winter break to renew the visa. Having said all this, I know it is not easy to obtain/renew a student visa. I am a music major, just transferred, with a GPA of 3.75. I have an almost full ride. I don't know how hard it is for Europeans to renew their visa. Could the full ride be a problem? I also have no idea how to prove my intent to return home. When I applied the first time they didn't even ask for it. Now that I need to renew I am a little more concerned. The thing is that I do want to return home...miss my family ...but I do want to finish education here. Any suggestion would be appreciated.Thank you! |

I am from The Netherlands (born and raised so 100% Dutch). Also, I just transferred to my school. By the time I want to renew the visa my grades won't be posted yet by my professors. Is this acceptable or do you think they'll fuss about it? I have all grades of the previous school. Thank you!

You should have no problem at all. Go to the international office of your school with your plane ticket before you leave the USA. They will sign your I-20 on page three, and ask them for a "verification letter", a letter that says you were in the school and will return. They may not give such a letter, some schools don't.... so if they don't, it is OK. But if they give it, why not take it.
Finally, you will need to pay the stupid SEVIS fee again! $200. You can pay at www.fmjfee.com, ask your international office if you have a question about it.... they may pay it for you.... but usually not. Tino

I read about the SEVIS but I was under the impression I did not have to pay it again. On the website of NAFSA it says that visa renewals don't require to pay it again. I have seen it on several websites but when I make my appointment today I will ask to be sure. I can also just pay it and avoid any unpleasant circumstances when things are unclear.
Thank you so much! |

You are right, I think you don't need to pay it....but I hear from people that they always ask for it at the renewal. It is annoying..... because I looked at the rules and I believe it is not required.
But as you imply, the rule is what the embassy says! The embassys are under the State Department, but the SEVIS thing is under Immigration. Two different parts of the govt, and they dont seem to work together..... TIno
