Do I need to apply for F1 visa?

is there anybody can advise ?

I have B1/B2 visa (USA), Duration 10 years, Entry-Multiple
It will expire in Dec., 2013.
and I have been to states just one time in order to present my research paper
in the conference .Now I want to go there for my phd program.
This time, I'm little bit confused
do I need to apply for F1 visa at american embassy again?

YES!
It's a complicated thing to explain everything. But you can't study at any university, college or other institution without F visa.
In short: you have to apply to a university, it will send you I-20, you will bring it to an embassy and it will or will not issue F1 visa.

Of course you need to apply for the F1 visa once you receive the I-20 even if you have a B1/B2 visa. Apply for your visa at your home country.

ok, i have another question....i also have a b1 b2 visa for 10 yrs, and next yr i will be applying to colleges in the us for graduate studies....now u say i have to apply for an f1 visa, right? so, does the b1 b2 i already have then get cancelled?

no, it won't be cancelled - you will have different visas for different stays in US (f1 - study; b1/b2 - business/tourism)
