I would go with "an anomaly".

Even though the statement was fortright and had a lot of merit, among so many ambiguous (evasive) comments, it kind of sounded like "an anomaly" (exception).

You are right.

I wonder that according to the author's possitive attitude, why not choose 'paradign' which also shows possitive attitude?

Actually, that's the catch. The author's tone is not positive. Watch out for the keyword "whatever" on "whatever, its intrinsic merit"... he's meaning that whatever good things sth might have, it is actually a bad thing. So the tone is kind of negative.
