I have just taken the toefl. I socred: Listening:28
Structure/Writing 13-29
Reading: 30
Range: 237-290

I want to know the final structure/writing score I would obtain if I score 5 in the essay; if I score 5,5 in the essay or if I Score 6 in the essay.

Do you have any ideas??

First,

CONGRATS!!!
Simply great!

Then,

Since your score range is 237-290, which means that you'll get 237 if Essay score is "0" and 290 if esaay score is "6", I think you can linearly interpolate ...

score of 6 points on essay fetches (290-237=) 53 points in the scaled score.
=> each point in score fetches 53/6 = approx. 9 points scaled score.

If your essay score is 5.5, your scaled score will be around ...

237 + (53/6) x 5.5 = 237 + 48.58 = approx. 286

Erin, am I correct?

There are already a couple of posts about how to figure out your score. Here's one:

http://www.TestMagic.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=334

I also have a page about it here:

http://www.TestMagic.com/toefl/faqs.htm#find_cbt_score

Because there are always slight variations in the score, I use a simple "ballpark" method--1 essay point = 10 total points.

So, for a 5.0 essay: 290 - 10 = 280

For a 5.5 essay: 290 - 5 = 285.

Anyway, without a doubt, these are great scores! Congrats, Solo! Do you have any advice about the test for your fellow TestMagicians???

Friends. I think that the caclulation of the final score in the structure/writing part is a little more complicated than only doing linear interpolations.

I think that is more related with percentiles and things like that. Let's wait for my final score and we will see.:)

If the score is dependent upon percentiles, then we could not figure out the score--the percentile of each test or question is dependent upon the number of people who gotten the question right or wrong, and this varies from test to test.

For example, I've had students get scores like 780 on the SAT one year and be placed in say the 95%ile, whereas previous or later students will be in the 93%ile or 97%ile. Similarly, a lot of my students here take the SAT II: Chinese test and score perfect 800's on it, which puts them some years in the 65%ile!!

Anyway, so many ask about this... perhaps it's time to try again to get the answer directly from TOEFL...

My Final Score in the TOEFL:

List: 28
Struc: 28 (initial range 13-29)
Read: 30
Essay: 5.5
Total: 287

I am very happy with it! Now I am going to focus on the GRE and GMAT. One doubt I have is whether I should wait for the new GRE format (october) or not. Any suggestions having in mind my essay TOEFL score?
