Institution: Purdue AgEcon (MA)
Program: MA AgEcon
Decision: Admitted
Funding: $$$
Notification date: Late January
Notified through: Friendly Phone Call
Comments:
I am very, very happy to be notified early of the decision. It made a very good impression on me. I haven't been rejected / accepted into other schools yet, and I'm not surprised; I feel like an average applicant. The Purdue program also will discuss finishing a Ph.D. and whether I can get started on Ph.D. coursework there, which is a plus because I was originally scared of the longevity of a Ph.D. after 5 yrs of B.A.

I wanted to wait a while in case I wasn't allowed to post these things on the internet, or if it would be tacky to do so, but I feel confident that they have things in order at this point.

We'll see how the rest of the admits go... I'll be notified with the majority of you in late February / early March. Here's hoping. :)

however they did say in the email that they were gonna send me a formal letter soon with more details on the aid package they are offering me. Maybe that s what they re referring to in your acceptance email?

pevdoki1

Hehe, no.. my acceptance e-mail does not say whether or not I have aid. It reads:

I know many of you are wondering about financial aid packages. We have recently finished our ranking of students for financial aid. The first round of offers will be coming out in the next week. Since a number of faculty members are involved in contacting students who have been awarded aid, these offers do not typically come out simultaneously

I'll keep my fingers crossed..

I regret to say that the Economics Department will not be able to offer
you financial aid or recommend your admission to the University of

Your application... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response did you even come close to anything that can be considered a rational thought. Everyone at our University is now dumber for having read it. I award you no funding, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Comments: UPF could be one of the top schools in Europe, but their option of not having a well structured/planned PhD program is, in my opinion, diverting a lot of good students to other places. But they will surely make a lot of money with the MSc - which I definitely recommend for people who just want a good advanced degree.

Lucky I think that the admissions rate data is a bit dated. I know that it is AT LEAST 3 years old. And I get the sense that the department is moving up pretty quickly......they were able to place a decent number of people at research institutions the past couple of years.....and the phd class has doubled in size in about the past 5 yrs (they list their attending PhDs in the alumni newsletter online) so its likely that their admissions rate has declined over the past years...in other words dont beat yourself up about the 74% number!

03-04-2008, 11:54 PM
Institution: Northwestern University
Program: Ph.D. Economics
Decision: Admitted
Funding: "Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to offer you financial aid for the first year. Based on historical acceptance patterns, we feel that there is a reasonable chance that we will be able to offer you a University fellowship later on. (A university fellowship consists of a full tuition waiver plus a stipend of $15,084 paid in nine monthly payments of $1,676 over the first academic year. In addition it pays a stipend of $5,028 for summer 2009.
As soon as our ability to offer you aid becomes clear, we will contact you immediatly...."
Notification date: March 4 (Finally the famous e-mail from Mercedes Thomas)
Comments: Feel a little bit sad I was waitlisted for financial aid. I am all about theoretical microeconomics and it seems I am not a good enough candidate for one of the finest departments in the field (my top 5 in micro -not neccesarily on this order- Harvard (Fudenberg, Athey and all the young rockstars like Mihai Manea, Yichi Yamamoto, etc), Princeton (Morris, Gul, Pesendorfer), Northwestern (Dekel, Ely, M. Siniscalchi, etc, etc, etc), Caltech (uno de los mejores economistas latinoamericanos: Federico Echenique!; Chambers, McAfee, Camerer), NYU (Didn't apply, but definitely I will go there to have classes with Rubistein. His "Dilemmas of an economic theorist" introduction and conclusion are my favorite paragraphs in the world)).

Im also a little bit confused because I have not such an incredible profile as some of you guys around here-israelecon, econphilomath,eqitsadi- yet I was admitted with funding at H (maybe I am a good example that the best students are not neccesarily those that are admitted at H. Who knows). However, for the guys waitlisted or rejected at H, do not feel bad for a second (the right signals matter only for those of us who are not really smart -or not smart at all. ) So be cool, and get ready for the next two weeks: Princeton, Stanford and MIT!

íMucha suerte a todos!,
íNos vemos pronto!
