I may be reading into this too much, but in the last week, I have received two e-mail inquiries from faculty directors reviewing my application (Cornell, Iowa). One was asking about my real analysis grade from last semester (also commenting on the fact that he and one of my recommenders are old friends) and the other was regarding the topics covered in my analysis course. Is this a good thing, or am I looking into this too much? Both responded with an answer like, "Thanks, this will help a lot." Hmmm, help who?

Wow, I would take as a very good sign that they are taking the time to e-mail you about specific parts of your application. I think "Thanks, this will help a lot." means it will help them to make their decision.

This has to be a good thing.
