Hi guys,

I have been lurking around for some times...I apologize about that.
While waiting for yale I have received an offer by UPenn :grad:(placed very high on the waitlist for fellowship ).

The admission letter is quite standard, so I expect more admission coming soon. Hope this would be a valuable information.

Hmm, from her perspective, it would be a bad idea to give out specific information ("What's your name?" --"You're in / our") because then they'd probably get a barrage of calls from us (the counterattack), but let's hope she can tells us if they are sending out most decisions or just a select few.

?? So they send out offers although they haven't reviewed ALL files yet? That's hard to believe given that all econ departments emphasize that they base their admission decisions on the overall strength of the pool of applicants... Especially if they've also sent out offers which include financial aid... I thought one of you guys mentioned that funding is more the exception at UPenn so why should they make great offers and risk "wasting" their money if they haven't screened all the files yet? Any suggestions?

I heard from many professors (some of them are in the adcoms of top programs) that there is huge number of italian PhD students in the states (especially if you compare it with the pop. size). I wonder why this is the case? Did all of you guys study at Bocconi? (which has an amazing placement record)-

Next question: What do you think about U florence? I mean I am absolutely not interested in macro but I've heard from some people that this is a good place for macro-guys. What do you think?

Ok.
In one of my previous posts I wrote about the very good italian placement (I was not writing about me...) and everyone joked me...now you can see with your eyes.

I think it'S A VERY GOOD PROGRAM.
I am not applying there because I want to go to US but I have some friends who did. I think they have a good faculty and good students.
I guess EUI is comparable with places ranked 15-20 in US.
Better than Brown and Duke but worse than Princeton or Yale.
They are strong in Macro, Development and Metrics. Not so special in Micro.
My two cents...

While waiting for yale I have received an offer by UPenn (placed very high on the waitlist for fellowship).

Here's what I don't understand. The dept told Ecorleone that less than or equal to 5 admits have been sent out, so touchwood is one of the lucky few. Wouldn't the top 5 admits get full funding instantly instead of being put on a waitlist? Is UPenn that poor? Or are they not releasing admits in order of applicant rank?

[grats on the admit btw touchwood, it's better than what the rest of us have...]

Funny that out of 5 two are Italian....:hmm: I think Italians are great (easy Antonio, easy) but isn't that a big coincidence?

I don't think so. There are many applicants from Italy from what I've heard and as I said before as far as I've heard from very very reliable sources some Italian students get pretty good offers (i.e. from good places) and they also perform well in the program. So if a department like UPenn has some good experience with Italian PhD students from certain Universities they are more leaned towards an admission of those students right? So maybe "coincidence" is just the wrong word in this context

Ecorleone
02-21-2008, 11:48 PM
I agree with you all. But she was really surprised when I called her, and told me without hesitate that only a few admitted applicant were notified (less than 5 at that time).
My very personal opinion is that they may be sending applications in order as she received them form the adcom, nothing more complex than that.

In my experience, the admission secretaries NEVER lie, if they don’t want to tell you.. they just don’t tell you.

I called Minnesota last week (remember my post?) and she said "all decisions have been made.... all will be notified by next Friday at the most" and it happened. Same thing for Duke, NYU and Carnegie Mellon. They never lie!!

I been in contact with 6 econ departments by now, and I have shared all info with you all. But all the analysis we do after, even correct, is impossible to do in a 2 minute call. Sorry.

polkaparty
02-21-2008, 11:50 PM
My guess is that it is indeed a coincidence (in the sense that Italians are overrepresented in the set of first round admits). This is something like a random draw, and in some cases you'll get an outcome that doesn't look random. Italy certainly doesn't have a monopoly on excellent schooling and excellent students.

econphilomath
02-21-2008, 11:51 PM
I meant that out of the 700 applicants and the 60+ offers, 2 of the first 5 (not ordered) admits went out to Italians.

My hypothesis: Somebody within the depart was asked to order the Italians, and they picked these guys as the best ones, so they get admits. The point is that this guy made up his mind faster than the rest.

Valhalla
02-21-2008, 11:53 PM

So in your opinion EUI is comparable (based on your subjective ranking) with which US institutions Astral?

(Disclaimer: I don't think that programs are that dissimilar within the top-50. Programs of study everywhere include MWG Micro, Greene or similar Econometrics, and some sort of Advanced Macro....it'd be hard for me to name a single non-rigorous program within, say, the top-200 worldwide.)

In all seriousness, to me, it would be a solid ranking between 30-50. Not further from that, but not top-20. I'd compare EUI with some notable American programs like WUStL, UC Santa Barbara, Boston College, Texas A&M, even Georgetown. But I'd not put ahead EUI of other european places like Toulouse, UC London, LSE, and even Tinbergen. Once again, my subjective opinion, and absolutely open to debate.

Oh- well that was fun, now we better stop the Tower of Babel thing before we(I) get kicked out of the forum for being so unruly and rebellious.

Lets get this thread back on track...

I don't think UPenn will take a month to send out admits. They should finish up in at least a couple of weeks. I mean these guys have fly-outs to set up etc.

What do you guys think...?

Penn will make all admits by the end of next week I think. They're obviously not going to wait until the end of March.

They started pretty slow though. No gradcafe admits and only two TMers...

I hope we get some more admits rolling so we can have another exciting Friday:D

This thread is about how the Penn admit Fairy visits only Italians and brushes them with magic admit dust...

Yeah, Bocconi guys are everywhere.. from my university which is supposedly one of the best engineering school, I know just three guys studying in the US.
But as I said yesterday that is true for Economics Dept. Programs, not so true for Business School.. Frankly I don't understand why.

I want to share the following private info because it might represent hope for others:

there is a reason why many italians already got a decision from Penn, it is because the Bank of Italy offers, for the first time, a fellowship named Ando-Modigliani. This fellowship will be assigned to an italian student who got an offer in turn from Penn and MIT (this year from Penn next year to the italian who will be admitted at MIT). This explains why the university has evaluated the italians' applications.

However, I think they might as well kiss the fellowship goodbye, because I doubt iugi85 will be going to UPenn. Maybe something in Boston. Just a hunch.
