No comment as in you are not making a comment, or that they have not given you any details as to funding?

It is very rare that Yale makes an unfunded offer, and the funding that the students get is fairly similar.

I am delighted to inform you that you have been selected for admission as a full-time student into the Economics Program beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year. Your selection is a recognition by the Faculty of your accomplishments and, especially, of your promise as a scholar and a researcher

To those rejected: Waiting certainly sucks, but seeing several years of your work summed up in that online status check is miserable. I'm being totally selfish here when I say that it hurts me to hear it and makes my wait that much harder.

Historically they send everything out at the same time. If you haven't heard yet there is a decent chance that you may be waitlisted... but no guarantees.

In the past sometimes Yale has sent decisions the next day...

There is likely to be a "second wave" of admissions coming in a few days. Last year, Yale sent out the bulk of acceptances on Friday the 23rd, along with some rejections. 5 days later on Wednesday the 28th, candidates were either waitlisted or rejected.

So if you don't hear anything by the end of the day, chances are you are rejected or waitlisted. Don't give up hope yet!

Yay, congratulations! I'm also happy to answer questions. Like Nalfien, I'm under the impression that all admits are notified at the same time.

In terms of funding, you should get a base of $25k for 5 years, and last year the department supplemented this with an extra 5k-11k per year.

Funding letters are on the way to all of you guys. Everyone will get $25,000 over a 12-month period, plus extra (usually about $5,000) from the department. Plus health, etc. Yale is pretty standard on the offers. If you're wondering, I think most of us pay ~$800 in rent per month, plus heat and electricity. We find that we have plenty left over. I save about $800 per month, and I think that's pretty typical. New Haven is certainly cheaper than, say, Cambridge or Palo Alto.

I'd agree that UCSD takes more "chances" from smaller schools. They also accept quite a few, I think they made 117 offers last spring. Even if you don't get a funding offer (most don't) they will offer you some minimal aid the first year and you'll be funded from the second year on.

I remember reading in Nalfien's blog (?) that Yale is an excellent program that fails to attract the best students. Maybe this is their way of doing it. Once this works, life after grad school (or after the 36K) wouldn't be bad at all (especially for an aspiring econometrician like myself!)

polka: I'm speculating that having Yale's president in the dept sort of helped getting this package approved especially in light of the recent news on growing endowments. I'm expecting intense competition among schools (especially the Ivies) in terms of funding. Who says that the potential recession will affect student funding? =)

Yea I don't think so either. I'm just sore from explaining the false alarm to my neighbors. lol

Don't worry. I'm speculating that Yale released only a few offers (relative to the quantity from previous years) since offering 36K (or somewhere around that) to 65 people will lead to such a high yield. Once people start rejecting these, more funds will be released and they can split some of these and offer to more people. Purely my speculation..

For those of you still waiting, I called today and asked. There are 12 people on the waitlist (I am one of them). So to all in this thread, dont go to yale, I really hear the program has gone down hill :)
Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope left for us.

Congrats! Waitlist is certainly better than outright rejection.

That stipend of 36k is insane. If Yale is having trouble attract students it seems like investing in professors is a better way than simply increasing funding from an already high level. Perhaps the marginal costs of increasing professor quality is too high.

12 - waitlist...I wonder how many offers they sent out?

OTOH, if Yale wants to increase (or, in Yale's case, let's say "maintain") the quality of *undergrad* education, throwing a few bucks at good grad students may be cheaper than hiring tenured faculty.

I think they are investing a lot in hiring profs (see posts related to Yale in the big moves thread). To add to the big moves thread, I'd say I won't be surprised if they're wooing Victor Chernozhukov (I just extrapolated from the scheduled "meet and greet" in his seminar at Yale)

That'd be bad news for me.....again, in my stupid pattern, one of the main reasons for applying to the OR center at MIT was....yes, you guessed it: the prodigy Stanford kid, Mr. Victor Chernozhukov! If I get admitted to MIT (yeah, keep dreaming...don't you feel the soreness on your buttocks from the kick NWU gave ya?), the first thing I will do is ask Prof. Chernozhukov if he is staying or not.

there's one admit at gradcafe saying he/she called the dept and found out that they had a mistake. i'm quite surprised this happened and would love to know exactly what happened (from reject to admit, from no news to admit?). In any case, if any of you think you really deserve the admit and thick-skinned enough to tell Yale, I don't think it would hurt calling them.

Anyway, flyout information would be emailed by tomorrow afternoon accdg to Pam

P.S. Thanks Olm for the "moves" with the secretaries, I'll make the cash transfer tomorrow as promised! :D [j/k]

Also I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding with what I mentioned in an earlier post. I was a little excited as you can imagine. By "mistake" I mean they didn't notify me on Friday when the rest of the admits went out.

I haven't been reading the past posts but anyway, flyout will be on Mar 28-29 with a $600 travel reimbursement (from the letter looks like they'll be handling accommodations as well, on top of the $600). Anyway, probably this post is redundant since everyone should've received the flyout email.

Oh, did anyone of you got contacted by Peter Phillips? I'm gauging that if it's a personal email, I'll reply lengthily (ie ask questions etc), otherwise, I probably will just write a thank you note.

I just receieved an flyout invitation letter from Pam and seemingly personalized letter from P.C.B. Phillips!!

Phillips letter emphasized the strength in econometrics of Yale, referring the number of graduates who got Ph.D. with econometrics and how well they ended up in the job market. Also, he mentioned one of my letter writer(my advisor) and his personal(academic) relation with him. I guess he devoted some time to write this letter for me and that makes me feel very flattered haha.

Great guys, congratulations! Sorry for getting your hopes down (hmm, that sounds weird) earlier - I really thought they would've informed all admits at the same time - I still think they meant to, and this was just an admin error.

They usually get faculty members to personally contact admits, last year most people got emails, with a follow-up call. Asianecon and Julius, Peter's on sabbatical (in New Zealand) until at least May, so I don't know if he'll be at the flyout, so it's probably a good idea to ask him questions through email or even give him a call.

Haha, I'm not sure if SOPs get read, last year I was contacted by profs from: IO, micro, macro and development (from different schools, of course)
[I thought it was reasonably clear from my application that I was interested in theory]
