“Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of time”

When Giordano Bruno first told the World the truth about the Solar System that “the Earth is not the center of the Solar System”, his knowledge was falsified and he was burnt at stake. This tragedy happened because he had dared to go against the Church, the Highest Command that then controlled the people and the society. There are many other examples such as Socrates, Copernicus, and Galileo etc.

 

 

This is one of the major proofs of the fact that important truths when begin, are repelled by the accepted norms and beliefs. It is the human psychology that usually causes this kind of distress to the mankind. Massive population generally is happy and satisfied to be led by a handful of authoritative men than to go and find their own paths.

 

 

Even if the Truth, as the word itself tells, is based on the facts that can be proved, the opinion of the society cannot be easily molded. Whatever be the field, science, social issues, ethics, politics, none of the new important truths are smoothly accepted by us.

 

 

When Shri Raja Ram Mohan Roy told the world about how and why women should be given the privilege to be educated and become independent, he was opposed by the much orthodox nature of the Indian Society. He had to explain again and again the importance of an educated society where both men and women have the capability to make the world a better place to live. Much along these lines goes the example of the Burqa System. In the olden times and in some places even now, the Burqa System prevails and the women are forced to live inside their homes only. Whenever they go outside they have to wear the burqa to keep their faces hidden.

All over the world, especially in the Middle-East, an unstoppable effort is being made to completely banish the Burqa System, and allow the women to live freely. These efforts lead to various disasters such as riots and wars among various religions, death and destruction etc.

 

 

Even if the idea or the fact is as small as cutting your fingernails at night, it is opposed by the elders of the home or illiterate people as they believe it will bring bad omen to them. What they fail to understand is that in earlier time when electricity was not discovered, people could not cut their fingernails only because they could not see properly at night and not because of any bad omen.

All these facts state the conclusion that human mind is not easily perceptible to changes. People do not like the idea of diversion from their normal routine or mindset. It is difficult for them to accept any modification or transformation on the first look. But the recurrence of these important truths and their proofs in the society and eventually in the minds of the people will help enlighten them. We must hope that literacy and awareness in the society would create openness in the minds of the humans and preserve humanity.
