Just checked gradcafe, saw a fellow acceptance and checked the website.

I am in at University of California, PhD in Computer Science (Technology and Information Management Track)

I got a fellowship and funding worth $20K a year guaranteed for 4 years.
Thanks so much everyone. This has been such a relief because this is my first notification ever this time !!

To all fellow forum members, how would you rate UCSC? In all possible ways from all possible angles !!

Thanks guys !! I am just going to wait for some more notifications before making the final decision. The best thing though is that my sister lives 45 minutes from Santa Cruz so I might be able to save money (she will pay my rent )

Some CS professors who have gone to Santa Cruz are now at Amherst, Cornell, etc.:

site:.edu computer science professor "SANTA CRUZ" -ucsc - Google Search

but it seems that's because they went to Santa Cruz for it's renown Bioinformatics program.

A CS professor at UF who got his PhD from Santa Cruz in 1984:

BTW, it seems some people in Santa Cruz have already found out about your admission:

Seriously, though, the location (in the middle of a redwood forest overlooking the Pacific) seems to be amazing if not inspiring:

Anyway, regarding the important stuff, their professors seem excellent:

Graduate Programs- TIM @ SVC - Information Systems Management - Jack Baskin School of Engineering, UC Santa Cruz
ISTM Department Faculty Information at UC Santa Cruz
ISTM Department Affiliated Faculty and Lecturers

Since I like Information Retrieval, I noticed that Dr. Zhang seems like a rising superstar:
UC Santa Cruz - Review Magazine: Fall 2007
    http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/~yiz/cv_zhang.pdf

Someone who worked in Dr. Zhang's IRKM lab and graduated with just an MS degree is now a research engineer at IBM:
    http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/~zigoris/zigoris_resume.pdf

Also, it seems their courses are really pushing the importance of probability models and operations research, which is another thing I like.

So I now see why you applied. The Technology & Information Management (TIM) program seems excellent as well as new, exciting, and very promising:

These analytically-trained graduates will be prepared to take leadership roles in existing companies or to help create new enterprises. Its Ph.D. graduates will be exceptionally well-equipped for careers in academia or industrial research.

    I feel envious

Well, I applied to work under Ram Akella who is pretty famous in India. I thought that he wouldn't take me since he is a IIT/IISC graduate and these guys generally take their own brethren. I come from a top 10 university but not the top bracket like the IITs.

Also, if you check out his profile, Professor Akella's students have gone on to teach at very very reputed institutions. That was another factor. I think that I am leaning towards UCSC right now (since its my only admission) but if I get into Stern or anywhere better, I might have to reconsider !!

Many IITians apply to UCSC (my friends brother is doing his PhD in the same department). I applied to TIM because I figured that since its new, I just might be able to squeeze in - which I think I somehow have - though how I don't know.

Having said that, CalmLogic I love your links and sense of humor !! May you get admission into any place you find !!

    @ancagalon.

there are young superstars in Santa Cruz, CS TIM and CE. You might be able to work with some of them... it's a strange school of engineering growing a lot.
Zhang (TIM) Achilioptas (my favourite for CS)
