Left-handed persons

Left-handed persons have an advantage over right-handed persons on tasks that are controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain and painting, for most people, is a task mostly governed by the right hemisphere of the brain. However, left-handed persons contract viruses, such as influenza, more frequently than do right-handed persons.

The information above, if true, best supports which of the following hypotheses?

(A) There is a greater proportion of left-handed persons among painters than there is among non-painters.

(B) Most people who contract influenza or other viruses are left-handed rather than right-handed.

© If a left-handed person contracts a virus similar to influenza, that person will probably be a painter.

(D) Most left-handed painters are more susceptible to influenza than is the population as a whole.

(E) There are a greater proportion of left-handed persons among painters than there are right-handed persons among non-painters.

(A) There is a greater proportion of left-handed persons among painters than there is among non-painters. --> This is the correct answer.

(B) Most people who contract influenza or other viruses are left-handed rather than right-handed.-->argument says left handers catch influenza more frequently i.e. left handers will catch it again and again, but that doesn't mean that at any given point most people who catch influenza will be left handers.

© If a left-handed person contracts a virus similar to influenza, that person will probably be a painter. --> Can be true but not necessarily.

(D) Most left-handed painters are more susceptible to influenza than is the population as a whole. -->The catch here is that argument says left handed person catch influenza frequently, i.e. Most left handed persons are more susceptible to catching influenza as compared to the population as a whole. But this is not necessarily true for a smaller subset (left handed painters) as compared to rest of population (right handed ppl + left handed non painters)

(E) There are a greater proportion of left-handed persons among painters than there are right-handed persons among non-painters. --> This can also not be inferred from the argument.

I go for (A).

I think it is D

In OG I read that a hypothesis should consider both the evidences/premises. Even though other individual answer choices about painters or virus infections could be true, we need to pick a choice that covers both the premises.

Hence, we are left with C and D

D fits well

Why is B not the answer

Given B: Most people who contract influenza or other viruses are left-handed rather than right-handed.

Preferable B: Among all the people who contracted influenza or other viruses, most people are left handed rather than right handed

(B) Most people who contract influenza or other viruses are left-handed rather than right-handed.---> left handed persons tend to contract virus does not necessarily mean that 'Most people who contract influenza or other viruses are left-handed rather than right-handed'

© If a left-handed person contracts a virus similar to influenza, that person will probably be a painter.---> just reverse because right handed people are generally painters and left handed people contract influenza

(D) Most left-handed painters are more susceptible to influenza than is the population as a whole.---> looks good

(E) There are a greater proportion of left-handed persons among painters than there are right-handed persons among non-painters.

--> no mention of proportion/number

IMO D

Answer is B ! only supported completely ! left-handed persons contract viruses, such as influenza, more frequently than do right-handed persons

A not explicitely stated, we have no right to guess weater or not is true !

C completely wrong, need not to be a painter at all !

D we have no this information, we have no right to guess, maybe entire population is left handed...

E not supported, out of scope, irrelevant

I don't agree with your answer. If there were a total of 100 people. 90 people may be right handed. Out of this say 20 get flu. Only 10 may be left handed and they may all get flu. But still the number of right handed people getting flu is more. There is no evidence to suggest that number of people right and left are similar. So this cannot be the answer I think.

incredible, how come D is right??

Premise 1: Left-handed persons have an advantage over right-handed persons on tasks that are controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain and painting, for most people, is a task mostly governed by the right hemisphere of the brain.

Premise 2: However, left-handed persons contract viruses, such as influenza, more frequently than do right-handed persons.

and our beloved D says " Most left-handed painters are more susceptible to influenza than is the population as a whole"

you see the difference??

B is the answer. it is just a re-phrasing of premise 2, which is very valid.

I would pick A. My reasons are:

The question asked: the information above, if true, best supports which of the following HYPOTHESES - this is the key IMO

E: Not an accurate hypothesis-we know nothing about RH non-painters. There are probably more RH people overall so this wouldn't work.

D: This is stated in the question (LH painters are still LH therefore still contract viruses etc.) If the question asked us to support the argument this may be the answer, but we're asked for a hypothesis.

C: Inaccurate - for this to be true the majority of LH people would have to be painters.

B: Inaccurate - mixes number of people who contract viruses with the frequency they are attracted.

A: Correct. Given that left hand people have an advantage over RH people on tasks controlled by right hemisphere (evidence), painting is one of these tasks (evidvence), it would be fair to HYPOTHESIS that there is a greater proportion of LH persons among painters than there is among non-painters.

A is wrong because just because left handed people have an advantage painting doesn't necessarily mean there are more left handed painters.

B is wrong because just because left handed people contract diseases more frequently, doesn't necessarily mean that more people with influenza are left handed. For example, left handed people may only make up 2% of the population

C is completely out of the park, there is nothing prove that

D is the best choice. the painters part throws you off a bit, because there is no direct link from painters to influenza but there is a link between left handed people and influenza

E is completely irrelevant
