vijay1311
Can anyone explain the below problem?? Solution A is 20% salt and solution B is 80 % salt. If you have 30 ounces of solution A and 60 ounces of solution B in what ratio could you mix solution A with solution B to produce 50 ounces of a 50% solution? a)6:4 b)6:14 c)4:4 d)4:6 e)3:
newyear
30 ounces A --> 6 ounces of salt 60 ounces B --> 48 ounces of salt x= amt of A taken to make final solution y= amt of B taken to make final solution Final solution to have 25 ounces salt. x+y=50 0.2x + 0.8y = 125 x=25, y=25 so 1:1 or 4:4 the info "If you have 30 ounces of solution A and 60 ounces of solution B" seems to be redundant

canadian phd
The official answer is 4:4. I got confused by the redundant information.Thanks a lot This is how I did it: (0.20A + 0.80(50-A))/50 = 0.50 0.20A + 40 -0.80A = 25 0.60A = 15 A= 15(10/6) A = 25 Mixture contains 50 grams so B = 25. 25/25 = 1 -CPhD Edited July 22, 2010 by canadian phd I'm an idiot
vijay1311
vijay1311, you're killing me! I just spent that last 20 minutes of my morning trying to get my answer to match one of your posted choices. I write the GMAT on July 26th so it was freaking me out that I couldn't get a simple problem like this. Anyway, thanks for the clarification. This is how I did it: (0.20A + 0.80(50-A))/50 = 0.50 0.20A + 40 -0.80A = 25 0.60A = 15 A= 15(10/6) A = 25 Mixture contains 50 grams so B = 25. 25/25 = 1 -CPhD hey..i did'nt get you....did my post help you or not....the answer choice 4:4 is already mentioned in the multiple choices.. All the best for your exam..Do brief me about the exam once you finish your exam...i am planning to take the test at the end of august..Thank you
canadian phd
My apologies vijay. Yes, your post was helpful! Debrief (if above 700) will be posted Monday or Tuesday. I'm hoping for 48q, 42v. Not exactly sure what score will result.
