Ace-gmat
A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass. (A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass. (B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. © After passing through a red giant stage, a star’s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. (D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. (E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. GoISB
(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. It is not the mass of a star that is passing through the red giant stage, but the star itself. So, the subject should have been "the star" whereas now it is "the mass". ShivS
First I chose E and then read again and found that 'the mass' cannot be the subject. And option D correctly use the subject 'the start'. Hence D.
matarsak
Excuse me! Why is B wrong?
xenos14
Option B seems to have redundancy......... ambiguity because of "it and its" what the first 'it' refers too??
