piyusht
1. Stars like the sun can continue to shine steadily for billions of years because its light and heat are produced by nuclear fusion, in which titanic releases of energy result in the loss of only tiny amounts of mass. (A) its light and heat are produced by nuclear fusion, in which (B) nuclear fusion produces its light and heat, in which © nuclear fusion produces their light and heat, where (D) its light and heat are produced by nuclear fusion, where (E) their light and heat are produced by nuclear fusion, in which whts the difference between C & D other than active v/s passive. which one is preferred? Also, the usage of where does not specify the exact place where this phenomenon is occuring. I would prefer D. I rejected A because it refers to the activity of nuclear fusion rather than that in the sun.. Please correct me if i am wrong... comp_bos
Its neither C nor D. It's E. Subject "Stars" plural. Pronoun "their" plural. C also gives "their" but then faults on "where". we use "where" to refer to some place. E: nuclear fusion, in which....
800Bob
Yes, the correct response is E, which by the way is passive. So what? Passive is not necessarily wrong.

gmat168
Phew, I chose E and then saw piyusht ask about C&D -- thought I picked the wrong one.
gmat168
If it were written this way: Stars, like the sun, .... does it make it clearer why the subject is "stars?"
ravin
E seems to be right one
piyusht
OA is indeed E , was just asking abt C&D. Guys dntget confused.. stick to ur answers
quebeco
If it were written this way: Stars, like the sun, .... does it make it clearer why the subject is "stars?" Good point ! I picked E too. But I do want to expound on your illustration of "Stars, like the sun....", what if we have a scenario that goes "Stars such as the sun..." , would you still consider "stars" as subject of the sentence or "the Sun" ? A "Like vs such as" discussion might be opened here... So, people, pls join in...
gmat168
quebeco, I think changing the words around to "such as..." doesn't make a difference. The subject is still "stars." -- Stars, such as the sun,...."

Hope ur doubt is cleared, piyushT... main difference b/w © n (D) is the use of pronoun ...'their' n 'its' respectively.
bearbull
so why did we chose in which over where ? Where is for a specific geographic location in which is used for communities etc. I guess i am rt ? Am i ?
maverick08
I think that 'in which' can be used for procedure, concept, process, some other scientific term.
