    i hope it's D.

    A. "is" should be "was"
    B. "during 1980's" is misplaced
    E. "is estimated as doing" is wrong.

Only C is left. But i think D is better.

    (D) seems to be fine

    (A) - uses passive voice
    (B) - usage "and added.." who/what added?
    (C) - "It is estimated that there was..." - pronoun "there" doesnt refer to a noun
    (E) - ".. as having left.." - redundant and wordy

A is precise besides being correct in grammer & diction. So no point in changing stem. What is OA?

    A is clear.

    D is wrong, why?

Use of "Adding" , makes is feel that just by estimating , it has added pressure.. which is not right..

    cheers

A is wrong for two reasons:

    1. "During the 1980's" is misplaced -- seems to be modifying "is estimated" instead of "to have left."

    2. "Estimated to have left Mexico and added to the strain" means illogically that the $50 billion did two things: it left Mexico and it added to the strain.
