    The second blank has to be redundancy because it is clearly shown that the organ possess enormous survival advantages (something in addition is redundant). Hence it has to be persist in the first blank.Even if it is difficult to find the solution for the first blank, the words degenerate and expire gives out the same meaning and the word persist stands odd among the 3 options.
