passed Toeflibt through rescoring 22 to 28 in speaking

    scores: R=26 L=28 S=28 (from 22) W=25

I could not believe how much my score in speaking went up from 22 to 28. I took the exam on March 7th. It was my 3rd attempt. I needed 26 in speaking and I thank God that I finally passed it. I even scored 2 pts higher.

On my first exam, I was very nervous when I started the speaking section. I realized after the exam that the speaking questions were not that hard and I was nervous for no reason at all. My score in speaking was 23 only. I asked for rescoring just in case but it did not change. On my 2nd attempt, I did not get enough sleep the night before. I barely had 4 hrs of sleep. It was because I tried to read few essays before going to sleep. During the exam, my mind was floating. As expected, I only scored 97/120 and 24 in speaking.

However on my last exam, I made sure I had enough sleep. I had at least 8 hrs of sleep. I felt so good when I woke and during the exam. The day before March 7th though, I went through the speaking tips of Jason Renshaw. You can visit his online school. It is really very helpful. I also used the Barrons and Kaplan books for the whole preparation of this exam.

When I received my score for the 3rd attempt, I only got 22 in speaking! I was very disappointed because I knew I did very well. I did not hesitate to ask for rescoring again. So, I finally received what I deserve, 28!

My tips: Prepare, have enough sleep the night before and relax during the exam.

BTW, english is not my first language but I've been living in an english speaking country for almost 6 yrs now. That is an advantage for me.

Thank you! Before taking the exam, I was praying that I will be able to do well especially in speaking. After the exam, I was praying for the rater of the exam that he/she will be considerate in giving scores. If you received a score lower than you expected, do not hesitate to ask for rescoring. So, do your best and pray for the rater after.

Ok, so the most important thing is to prey.

Can you tell us the exact prayer that worked for you?

I would say "God bless my TOEFL raters"

I'm not offence at all. A little bit of humour is welcomed during this tough time between the test and the results as I'm often thinking about I should have done in the test but did not. And it stress me a lot. I'm pretty sure that my score will not reflect my real English level.

I guess right now God really bless your TOEFL raters

I hope you all the best and the future test takers. Indeed, it is a rough road to take.

Thanks Jaken and Logy for sharing with us. Life is not always fair. I can't imagine how many times you have to take this test over and over if you didn't rescore your tests.

Is this what NABP concludes that ETS has 4 different raters so it is tranparent and fair?

Four different raters graded the tests. They gave you one score. Then, another rater who called him/herself a specialist rated your tests. He gave you another totally different score.

If it is fair, why doesn' it break by raters to us, and by 3 parts of grading: content, language ability (accent), and grammar and so on.

I am sure that at least one or two raters out of 4 raters at the beginning gave you very high scores while the other 1 or 2 dislike your accent, so they punished you by giving very low scores.

A lot of speculations come up to my minds. However, congratulations to you for your getting over with this stupid process. It is just the beginning of bias and prejudice that you will encounter.

    God bless you.
