Google Refine: A Useful Tool for Empirical Research

If you've never seen it before, Google Refine is a free tool for beating messy data into a clean format. It has a nice set of features for diagnosing inconsistencies in your data and then applying a transformation to correct things. Google Refine also runs on your local machine, so no need to worry about uploading your data elsewhere. Most importantly, it's easy to work with.
