    Profile Evaluation Fall 2016

    Sponsored Ad:
    PROFILE:

Type of Undergrad: Top 10 Econ PhD / 2 years before at a public uni without Econ PhD

    Undergrad GPA: 3.87 (current)/ 3.91 (past) double major Econ/Math

    Type of Grad:N/A

    Grad GPA:N/A

    GRE: n/a

Math Courses taken before transferring: Cal 1-2 (A), Combinatorics (A), Real Analysis (W)
Math Courses at Top 10: Calc 3 (A), Computer Simulation (A), Linear Algebra (A), Real Analysis(A-), ODE (in progress), Intro to Topology (in progress)

Econ Courses (grad-level at Top 10): grad MA elective (B+)

Econ Courses (undergrad-level) before transferring: Intro Micro/Macro (A/A), Econometrics (A), Adv Econometrics (A), Labor (A)
Econ Courses (Top 10 - undergrad) : Intermediate Micro/Macro (A/A), Industrial Organization (A), Behavioral (A), Independent Study w/ faculty (A), Thesis (in progress)

Other Courses: Intro C++ (A), some programming course (A), Stats (A) - all transferred, some poli sci classes on labor, Finance (B+), a few accounting classes (all As)

    Letters of Recommendation:

    1. Independent Study full-time faculty, Econ PhD from top 10 US, took a class from him, did well, so he suggested indep study

    2. Econ Prof. doing current research with him (PhD from abroad), mentor for a research grant

    3. Econ Prof. thesis adviser, PhD from Top 5, should be strong

Research Experience: 2 summer RA grants and one ongoing; current thesis in Macrotheory

Teaching Experience: Math grader for Calc I (one semester), math tutor 2 years

    Research Interests: Macroeconomics, Labor

SOP: not yet, should be fine.

Concerns: not enough math classes, not strong enough LORs, no published papers, no strong grad level classes

Applying to: what range should I apply for ?

Other: what should I focus on most since I have one year left to apply?

    Any advice is appreciated!

The general consensus on this forum is that if you are at someplace as good as a T10, we have little that we can offer that will be as helpful as talking with your advisor(s). To that end, I would meet with your advisor and ask two questions:
    1) How do you compare to their past students.
    2) Where do they think you should apply.

With regard to #2 above, some combination of ranges from 1-20 based on preferences, LoR's connections, GRE scores, university past placements (and how you compare - see #1 above). Your advisor(s) will give the best advice - this is just some type of ballpark.
