econa10
I am currently an RA at a policy institution and am considering doing a second RA role. Does not having taken Real Analysis significantly harm RA applications (for university based positions)?
TenukiMario
I have heard of not having Real affecting RA applications even at policy institutions (I know of an example at a prominent DC think tank). Seems like BS (who uses Cauchy sequences doing RA work??), but it was apparently the preference of the fellows to have someone who took higher math. So really I don't think it *should* hurt you, if the world was fair. But it might, depending on the preferences of whoever is hiring. econhappy
It should not do much harm. It would likely be a positive signal; but the majority of university based RA's take Real Analysis while they are RA's. That is one of the main reasons for being a university based RA (taking classes). Your job experience will serve you well in the applicant pool.
