nikopol
Hello folks. I'm a fourth year economics student at Middle East Technical University (METU - Ankara) and planning to apply to graduate programmes next year. For now, I am considering Tinbergen Institute, U Pompeu Fabra and U Carlos III de Madrid. However, I have certain concerns about job market. What would be my chances to work in the universities of the continental Europe if I stay after masters and take my PhD from one of these programmes? Do you have an idea about the performance of these institutes' graduates in the job market? Let's talk not for outliers, but average graduates. Thanks in advance! asianeconomist
Excuse my naivety, but are you referring exclusively to the academic job market ?
nikopol
Sorry if I couldn't express myself clearly. Definitely "academic job market" was what I meant.
faulkner
I guess the following rank: 1.Tinberger 2.UPF 3.UC3M
asianeconomist
I cannot comment on the other two, but here in TM it was mentioned that Tinbergen has recently started getting good placements (post-docs, assistant profs etc.) into the top 10 in US. UPF is good at placing their Masters students abroad, but I am not entirely sure that whether it extends to PhD too. I think you should email the grad secretary of all the 3 places for their recent academic placements.

asianeconomist
Thanks for sharing the info. If this is the placement of the most recent graduating class, then UPF indeed seems to have quite good placements. I would guess that some of the European placements only occur as students from Europe are unwilling to leave the continent. If that is true, then UPF's placements are even better. Norfrost
Thanks for posting the list, nikopol. Those placements are not bad at all.
nikopol
I have received an e-mail from Tinbergen. They do not have a list for earlier graduates, but for the recent ones. Here I paste the related part: "Of the most recent cohorts, our graduates have ended up in tenure-track positions in New York University (Stern School of Business), Indiana University (Kelley School of Business), University of Essex and Warwick Business School and as postdoc researchers at Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management), Princeton University (Princeton Laboratory for Experimental Social Science) and the University of Chicago." I wish they had sent some information about the tenure track positions earnt in continental Europe.
asianeconomist
It appears that Tinbergen places it's best students extremely well. But it would be interesting to know about the general placement, i.e. students who were not near the top of the graduating class - where did they end up ???
