  1. The question is how would they decide who are the members that used the site and then cancel the scores. The members never used their real names. Only thing is their email address. So does GMAC intend to use the email address to identify the cheating students?
  2. I think Chicago for finance PhD is the best. Then comes Stanford, NYU. Harvard, Columbia, MIT comes then. Wharton's MBA is very good but PhD is not as good.
  3. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia issued a default judgment awarding the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) damages in the amount of $2.3 million in a copyright infringement case brought by GMAC against the web site known as Scoretop.com. As part of the judgment, Scoretop representatives are prohibited from further infringements of GMAC’s intellectual property rights. GMAC sued the site and its owners for distributing copyrighted GMAT-related materials without GMAC's permission. Students who used the site to try to improve their scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test may regret it. The council has seized a hard drive from a server used to run the Web site, and says it will notify business schools of anyone who violated its testing policies by using the site. The council, which administers the admission test, will also cancel those students' scores. The seized hard drive contains substantial information about the individuals who participated in Scoretop’s unlawful activities either as employees or as "members" of the Scoretop site. GMAC has also seized the Scoretop domain name, which it now owns and controls. What do you guys think? How would the GMAC know who were the members who used the materials? Would they just match the email address?

    ScoreTop Suspended?

  5. Hi everyone. My profile: Undergrad: BBA in Accounting. GPA 3.9/4, 2nd highest in a Bangladeshi university GMAT: 770 Q51 V42 AWA6 Currently enrolled in: MS in Mathematical Finance at UNC-Charlotte with full-funding. Courses: Calc I,II,III, Linear Algebra. Partial Differential Equations for Finance, Micro and Macro Economics, Stat I and II, Introductory Econometrics, Financial Economic Theory, Derivatives and Fixed Income derivatives. To be taken: Financial Econometrics, Graduate Econometrics, Differentail Equations, Stochastic Calculus for Finance, Analysis I and II, Numerical Methods, Advanced business forecasting. Computing Skills: C++, STATA, MATLAB. Research Experience: Will do some research this summer starting from june 1. I will apply for finance PhD by Dec this year. Some say I have a pretty good profile, so should apply to top schools. and some say it's so tough to get into top schools so should apply to mediocre schools. I won't apply to more than 6/7 schools. Hope to get good LORs. I have always wanted to get into very good schools! Please give uour opinions! Thanks.
  6. Teazer, I agree with you. Let's see how it goes. Thanks for your valuable comments. asa_sl, I think if you have the habit of reading a lot, then good score in verbal is not tough at all. But my verbal score was not as good as I expected. Thanks.
  7. Your logic sounds very convincing. My paper is on "The impact of R&D on patents across all the states in US." It's basically a term paper for Econ course but the professor says it was pretty good and if I work on it for few more days, it would be worth publishing. He will co-author it. Thanks.
  8. Thank you very much. Your comments are like eye-opener. As for the research assistantships, I would try to hook up with someone but I am not sure about the compensation. In technology/scince-based projects, the assistant gets a fair amount of money but in finance/econ-based projects, I am not sure whther that is the case.
  9. desimba, thank you very much. I appreciate your suggestions. But the problem is that I don't see any professor here who does good research in my field. Though, I may get a paper published, it's in Econometrics, not in finance. What do you think?
  10. EE570, thanks for your reply. Actually I came here for funding. I didn't get full funding anywhere else though I made it to some top schools. As for the job prospect, the Bank of America and Wachovia are here to recruit even before graduation. The program has very good coordination with these banks. So job prospects look very good. But the compensation is not anywhere near the top schools. The starting salary is around $90,000. That's it.
  11. Hi all, I am doing an MS in mathematical Finance at UNC-Charlotte. My GMAT: 770 Q51 V42 AWA 6 GRE: Will take in jun/jul and hope to get around 1550 Course works: Undergrad- BBA GPA 3.9/4, 2nd highest in the class of 200 students at the top-most university in Bangladesh Undergrad Coures:4/5 courses in finance, 2 in Econ, 2 on Stat, 1 on Calc, 5/6 on Accounting. MS: Had to take Calc II, Cal III, linear algebra as prereqs. Will take Differential Equations in Summer. These all courses don't count towards my MS in Math-Finance, but just prereqs and preparation for PhD in Finance. MS Coursework: Math: Partial Derivative Equations, Stochastic Calculus, Numerical Methods Econ: introductory and advanced econometrics, economic forecasting Finance: 2 courses. Electives: Analysis I and a finance course. So far I hv GPA 4 in MS and hope to retain that. My stat courses in undeergrad were not from a Math/Engineering dept but from Business Studies faculty. They were also not calculus-based. Do you think I should take a calculus-based Stat course? I am doing MS with full-funding but I guess the University of North carolina at Charlotte is not well-reputed. Does that lower my chances of getting admission into top university like Chicago, berkeley, Wharton, harvard? I may get an Econometrics term paper published, but not certain and no other research experience. Hope to get good recos. Plz evaluate my profile. I have still one more yr in hand. So if you think there is some lackings in coursework, i can fill that. Thanks.
  12. One reason this might be the case is that some of the funding sources specifically require that only domestic students be accepted. Another thing, many schools require their PhD-aspitants to do TA. Since int'l students may have a unitelligible accent, many college students don't like them as TA. So they may like to recruit domestic students.
  13. Yes, it is true that, int'l students are not favored as much as the domestic students. I have heard from a relative of mine who did his PhD from top-10. The reason they show is that: for mba diversity is a big issue, but not so in case of PhD. And they don't want to spend money for foreigners. Spending money for domestic students is like a service to the nation. But this was a purely personal opinion. The admissions statisctics of top schools for PhD suggests this, though. The (admission/no. of applications) is certainly greater for domestic students than for int'l students. Simply, it can't be claimed that int'l students are less smart or brilliant. In fact, they show higher commitment to research.
  14. Hey, no-one out there to help me?
