  1. Hey you! :) I logged in after a long time too. How is grad school treating you? I have been keeping quite busy. Quals in a month!
  2. Lets see if we can... :) Hello ppl! Any regular WLTians around?
  3. @Samy and cri: Welcome back folks! Its great to see your posts again on WLT. :) @ Kron: Awesome bro! GATech is my sister's alma mater and she has only had good things to say about it. Let us know when you make your final decision. I am sure its going to be a tough choice to make
  4. Congrats! UIUC is a great place to be. :) Good luck with grad school!
  5. There is no such thread, Johny. Once you reach 100 posts, you can go to your profile and change your status message yourself. Thats how we became part of DA. :) Hope it helps!
  6. Actually, yes. I hardly check my gmail account. Its way too spamed, I might even have deleted your msg by mistake. Am sorry... :( You can email me on my yahoo ID... thats one ID that hasn't been spamed yet. Or you can always send me a PM. So did you want to ask me something? Let me know!
  7. Thats awesome, Shoaib! :) Am happy for you. What other decisions are you waiting for you? Which is your first choice?
  8. Its a very personal decision, Simba. If you feel very strongly about going for an MS, then you should not be influenced by your relatives or friends and just go ahead with application. But it seems to me that you are confused and are not able to make up your mind. So my suggestion is that you take the job for a year and then apply for MS next year. There and many reasons why I suggest this: 1. You will get a chance to see how the job is like and decide if you want to stay with the job for the rest of your life or go back to school. That way you will make an informed decision and there will be no regrets later. 2. Job experience is always a good thing to have in your resume when you apply. I do not know if you can do an MS thru Infy. You should ask someone who works there about it. But let me warn you that if you wait for a long time (say 3-4 years) before applying, then it becomes very difficult to quit your job and get back to school. Having a job is a very convenient thing and you will get used to it. The luxury of a job and having your own money might reduce your motivation to study more. So give it "a year" and then make up your mind. Good luck!
  9. Hey ppl! How have you all been doing? @kron: Congrats again! :) @Ish: Hows you? Any plans for spring break? I dont know the present state of the plans we were trying to make... Do you thing we can work out something? :hmm: @Shoaib: Long time! How are you doing? @Bscout: Congrats! :) @codename: The spammer has been taken care of and the message will also be gone soon :)
  10. I don't know of any free service. But I have heard that essayedge is a paid service that does a decent job. But honestly, you will be the one with best interest in your SoP. I would never be able to leave SoP writing to some third person and be peaceful. But thats just me! My suggestion is that you look through some model SoPs that you can find online. Once you get an idea from them, you can go ahead and write your own. Its really not that hard.
  11. Yeah, its been really long. :) I guess only few of us at grad school visit TM these days, which is very unfortunate. Lets hope things change. Ahoy there, captain! How are you doing? I presume spring sem classes are going fine for you guys. I am swamped with assignments right now. Looks like I have taken more courses than I can handle, again. :/
  12. I hope some of my TM batchmates and seniors will see this forum and drop by to have a li'l chit-chat :)
  13. You have posted in the wrong forum, narendranath! Since this is just your second post I assume you weren't sure where to post. Use the Graduate Admissions forum to post queries like this.
  14. Hi Yogesh! It would be nice if you do your homework before coming to the forums. Find out from your college seniors where they applied and where they got into. Look up university websites and see if they are a good fit for you and if you are eligible to apply to them. Some univs might explicitly state their cut-offs for GRE scores, GPA etc. Then come up with a shortlist of universities and post it here.
  15. Thats awesome illu! I am so happy for you :) [banana][banana][banana]
  16. Your profile so far seems pretty good to me. Most of the times adcoms look for motivation to do research (as shown by your previous research experience), academic performance (your grades), aptitude (standardized test scores) and sufficient English knowledge. Oh, and recomendation letters and SoP can be quite important too since they are the only way for the adcoms to know what you are like a person. Motivation and a good fit between the program and your interests are probably the most important things they look for. Being an international student only means that you will be competing against the other international students for the few funded positions they have for non-citizens. Apart from that it doesn't make any difference in the admission criteria. I would suggest that you print out some recent ranking to get a list of the univs. Most of these rankings are not very accurate, but will give you an idea of the overall tier that a univ belongs to. Then, based on how confident you are of your qualifications, you can choose a couple of schools from the top 10, few from top 25, some from top 50-60 and a safety school. Keep in mind that the safety school doesnt have to be the lowest ranked school. Choose only schools that you seriously wouldnt mind joining if thats your only option. Admission decisions can be very unpredictable that sometimes you will be rejected by your so-called safety school. Or for some people it turns out they will be rejected by all but their safety school. At that point if your safety school is so bad that you do not want to join, you will have to wait for the next fall to start everything all over again. Choose schools wisely. I can give you some hints on it: 1. Visit the websites of atleast 100 schools before you shortlist some 25. Then go to others for further advice on selection. (I think I visited atleast some 175 before I could come up with my list). 2. Don't try to choose schools when you first visit their websites. Read their admission criteria and try to "eliminate" schools that dont fit your needs. For eg. if a school needs AGRE and if you are not taking AGRE, eliminate it. If a school doesnt have your exact field of interest, eliminate it. If the school's deadlines are too early for your to meet, you can eliminate it. I am sure you will eliminate I do not know how oxford compares to the other schools in your list. In general schools in US are very different from those in UK. For eg, most PhD programs in UK are research oriented and you dont do much course work. They are also not very flexible and the duration is very short (3-4 yrs). In US, there is a lot of flexibility in choosing your mentor/resarch project etc. I have seen people who prefer to go to grad school in the US compared to UK. May be it depends on where you want to finally settle down. If you want to settle down in the US, the US schools might be a better option.... Think about it.

    New look!

I like look, except that I prefer the old logo... :)
  18. Finally... some known faces at WLT! :) @kab: So you noticed.. :D @ram: sorry sorry sorry... check ya mail. :)
  19. What test are you preparing for? We have forums for most of them. Just visit the threads, work on the questions posted there, post your answers, discuss answers with other posters and learn :) Help yourself!
  20. I wouldnt agree bscout. Definitely apply to atleast one or two programs that you dream of. It might seem like a stupid investment now. But believe me, its not. Admission results are always full of surprises. :)
  21. Welcome aboard, all of you! :) Good luck with your exams..
  22. Ucincinnati is a good choice. it admits a good percentage of the applicants and funds them as well... more than that it is a good school too. George mason is pretty safe, I guess. I am not sure abt UC merced. its new and we dont know its admission standards yet. Either way it wouldnt hurt to apply... go ahead and start submitting the applications. the sooner you submit them, the greater your chances are. Good luck!
  23. I think all your schools are good and if you have had good research experience, you would stand a realistic chance of getting into some of the schools in your list. CMU, UCSD and BU would be ambitious. VT, Iowa and USC might be moderate. You may want to include about 1 or 2 safe schools too (though I can't of any ATM).
