  1. The Topis is : The following appeared in a medical newsletter. "Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment." My analysis: The author's hypothesis that antibiotics be used for the treatment of muscle strain lacks strong reasons. The author is considering antibiotics to be useful on the study of only two doctors. There are many falacies in the hypothesis which I will try to put forth in the coming paragraphs. Firstly, the tests carried out were preliminary and not conclusive. The suspection that secondary infections hamper the recuperating period in the patients is still to be proved with convincing results. The sample size and the characterstics of patients in the group under study is also not given. The eating habits, general life, gender, age and many more characterstics are missing from the study given. Secondly, Dr. Newland who specializes in sports medicine may well not be informed about the general muscle strain caused by various other reasons. The patients under him may well have been more receptive to antibiotics. It is proved that if the patient's accepts any medicine and takes the general treatment as the determined way to be normal again, his body accepts the medicine well. The other doctor Dr. Alton is a general physician. A general phyiscian may not know about the intricacies of a muscle strain. How far is the muscle injured and what are the various symptoms of a particular injury. The diagnosis done by him may just be an overview of the pain and not a thorough one. Lastly, the study does not mention what was the effect over a period of time post-treatment. The relapse of the same injury in the two groups is not mentioned. There is no mention of how the treatment was monitored in the two groups. Conludingly I would say that the authors advise of taking antibiotics for the treatment of muscle injury is not based on any concrete results or study. Before arriving at such life affecting descisions the study needs to take care of each and every aspect of the patients life, his medical history and his general physical life. Also, when a study is being planned there should be a panel of doctors to discourse about the studies and a specialist to judge the two arguments.
