  1. thanks mav. so did you also find out how good or bad job prospects are for MS and MBA ? Also i was wondering if 2 analysts joined as Analysts (one with MS and other with MS), do they have diff. career path? who generally have more chances of moving ahead ..
  2. i wanted to see what everyone thinks about this issue from a career switching perspective( i am one of those) I have been unable to decide b/w MBA and MS in finance. so pls. share your thoughts. I have seen most people doing MBA to switch careers (mostly into finance) but have been wondering why they are choosing it over MS in finance. Is it because what if i don't get job in finance, i can look for job in some other field since i have an MBA in gen mgmt? thats not very much convincing i may be completely wrong, but if one is moving from say IT into finance, and eventually aims for management position, won't it be better if that person knows about the field he/she is in and then get promoted to mgmt position? Do you think MBA in finance will fare better than MS in finance from knowledge gain perspective? doing MS in finance, then working for 1 -2 yrs as an analyst, getting promoted to Jr. mgmt position followed by an EMBA : won't this be a better path for career switcher into finance? I see MBA more of as a leadership development pgm. and learning from your fellows work-exp that they gained in their respective industries, developing on your prev. work-exper and enhancing it. Can MBA train a person , having worked in IT for 9/10 yrs ( as a Tech-lead/quasi IT mgmt), as a Financial analyst as good as MS in finance. can someone differetiate b/w positions held after MS and held after MBA in finance. So lets say if you join as an analyst after MBA, how will the candidate will be in a better position over similar candidate who joined after MS in finance? I can definitely draw help from the experienced guys on this forum as i have to decide in next few weeks.
  3. can you pls. share your profile as i am also investigating this option are you a career switcher?how much experience?did you give gmat> thanks
  4. jlt, if you are a career switcher in an unrelated field you shoud go for F/T health care is a booming sector and has great growth prospects in near future. technology mgmt implies big 5. i investigated this career and it has good growth prospects but one thing that ticked me off was travelling. did you think about finance...
  5. My goal is to join as research analyst in some rating company which can give me some exposure about studying companies and have heard that it is the most common entry point for career switchers into finance. after working 1 yr, i plan on applying for CF in an investment bank. I fully agree that F/T is the best way but due to GC restrictions i have to be continually empoyed in same IT profession leaving me with no option but P/T right now i am in IT but not in an investment bank. Do you think if i make a move into bank in IT it can reduce my struggle in achieving my goals relatively easi any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
  6. mkcharan, since you work in a financial institution how hard is it to move from IT to business side if you are doing part time. gmatbong, can you also pls. share your views.
  7. thanks mkcharan. actually i am working on my stern app and will definitely will be able to use your and others experience .
  8. i agree with you IT is a dead end, which unfortunately i realized after 8 yrs . but i guess its never too late and i am sure i will be able to leverage my ecpe. in my future job. but even if when people like me, who are now deciding to get out of IT, i see everyone going into finance. is it because there are low barriers of entry and you get good ROI also since you are already in school, can you share with us other careers that you/your peers explored/exploring that fits well for a person with analytical inclination, with engineering background and that have good growth prospects. I have been investigating lately about the mgmt prospects in IT field but don't see anything interesting unless you get into top strategic consulting firms. Actually i am in my last stages of GC and so have to stick in IT job and have to be continually employed until i gets my card in hand. The more people i talk to, the more i am seeing the positive aspects of FT, the main one to me (career switcher) internship which gives you an oppurtunity to get into the company and learn the real stuff. But as i said, i can't join FT and above all my aging clock is ticking quite consistently.( 33 m) since you have been guiding lots of people, so just refreshing i work in top insurance company in NYC for last 4 yrs, have also worked in investment bank (1.5 yr), have worked in top technology company(2 yrs), transportation/logistics startup(1 yr), another mid tier tech company for 1.5 yrs. I have been working as an independent consultant basically for last 8/10 yrs all in us and for last 5 yrs have been associated with a non-profit organization whare i have regularly taught underprivileged and minority students. GMAT 730/undergrad REC 68% based from above facts can you guide as to : 1. should i wait to do FT or apply part time fall 06(NYU) and then later apply for FT 2. i can think of only finance and MC based on my profile. can you think of something else thanks
  9. kirsten, can you throw some light on how much travelling is involved in mgmt consulting. jobs ?
  10. very informative... BTW, how hard is to get into management consultancy if you plan on doing part time MBA say from NYU for a person with IT background and 10 yrs of experience. Do you guys think F/T will be better option since you get the oppurtunity to do internship. Also i am curoius to know why so many people are moving into finance from IT..
  11. thanks ... next yr i am thinking to apply only to NYU part time. lets see.
  12. thanks. one last q do you think if i wait 1 yr, when i get my pr, my chances at wharton for F/T can improve or age factor will run against me.
  13. Thanks for your prompt reply. well, i am planning to stick to my IT field but think need MBA if i need to move forward and change people's perception of me more than a Techie.. Do you think i stand any chance of getting thru NYU for fall 06. I have come to know after reading forums that its really tough for IT pool. I am in the last stages of getting PR, and also age factor is running against me. Pls. advice . regards
  14. hello, I am 33 Indian male (old.. ) with IT experience for last approx 10 years with last 8 yrs in US. Bachelors in engineering from Regional Engineering College,India scored mere 69 percent Just gave gmat and scored 730 (q 50,v 38) 97 percentile I am working full time and am plannning to do part-time at stern. Think can convince my employer to take up partial expense. for last 3.5 yrs wrking in top insurance company and have also worked at investment bank for 1 yr . Do you guys think any other option like full time that may be better and if you think so, what other better schools i may have chances... regards
  15. quant difficulty level was at the same level of og11 rc weren't that bad crs were of og11 level sc can't say .. but i think they are quite liberal in verbal scoring because i knew i wasn't doing well during verbal but still they gave me 38.. i am sure you all will do well next yr . Happy holidays !
  16. hello, Thank you all for helping me going thru this phase. it was tough being out of college for 10 yrs for this indian techie test ordeal: analytical writing section was easy. level of quant was b/w powerprep and og got one probability q and one combination verbal 4 rcs, 1 BF neddless to say i screwed big time in verbal and wasn't expecting. i improved a lot in verbal lately and was quite confident but was blanked during the exam. was picking choices for sc what sounded good and not looking for any technical reasons. i think i felt very uncomfortable with the resolution, although i did take 2 powerprep practice tests. I think lately i have been taking princeton/some kaplan and gmatprep tests and never took powerprep in last month. i think resolution decreases ur speed especially in RC because you need to scroll over as it puts less text, i think. Anyway, its better whoever is taking in 06 from this perspective. i used og11,pr and this forum. I couldn't have scored this much without this forum, which gives candidate ample practice and logical reasoning. I will be more than happy to assist you if you have any qs. I intend to apply to NYU part time. Thanks once again
  17. i think it shud be c 24=(24*a+x*4a)/5a +1.5((24*a+x*4a)/5a ) given mixture ratio 1:4 let a lt of A be mixed with 4a liters of B let x be B concentration which comes out to 6 and combine mixture concentration also 6
  18. well if there were no brackets around k+1 then answer has to be b/w 1/2 and 1 otherwise dk is correct for q2 let pe and pw be probability of even and white respectively. then what you have to find is pw+pe -pw*pe stmt1 gives you pw*pe=0 stmt2 gives pw-pe=x combining also you don't get pw+pe
  19. e may not be true if self centered parents outnumber henerouys
  20. for 1 i am getting c b/w 1/2 and 1 it becomes a geometric series with each term 1/2^k
