  1. Hi again, Thanks Ruby and Moizza for your wishes. Verbal I felt was ok- maybe according to 580 standards. I had seen almost all the words somewhere in my prep- so it was not that difficult. SCs were also fine- you just need practice on that. RCs were the ones that caused the major fatality. I got topics ranging from music, american history to astronomy and medical research. One thing, though I am not very sure about it, I always had the feeling that the exam would try not to give us RCs where it thought we would be competent and have an advantage with our background knowledge. For example- in BigBook, I came across some medical RCs and I used to sweep them through and through. So naturally the exam wouldnt want to give me such RCs. Thats why in the introductory section where they take information about your educational background, I marked things like 'not in the list' and ' undecided'- thought this would give me an even hand. I dont know how much it helped though. They can ask this info after the exam also right? I would advise you to do all the verbal tests from Big book, but after you know how to tackle the questions as there are no explanations given in the BB. Some words even in the bigbook are not given in the Barrons word list; also few like others have mentioned are in the guruz software. Have a look at this too and learn from all your mistakes. keep revising word lists from barrons again and again. Mark the words that appear on the practice tests so that you are familiar with the 'high yield' words. Then solve as many CBTs as possible- Kaplan, Princeton, Powerprep, Cambridge etc. Also go through the practice questions and essay responses on the powerprep- I came to know of it on the last day and almost missed my train! Hope this helps, Varun.
  2. HI, TM members, I finished with my GRE today- scored 580 on verbal and 800 on quant- so that gives me a total of 1380/1600. OK not according to the TM forum's expectations but I just wanted to touch 1400 - so now I am just 20 marks behind it. AWA was alright- the topics are given in the list. Then, I got 2 verbal sections and 1 quant. I think the 2nd verbal was scored because I didn't do that well on it. Anyway, quant was easy, no probs or conic sections, no perm and comb. Only advice is PRACTICE! do as many CBTs as possible. Big book is alright. I couldnt do all the practice tests therein. Powerprep will tell your final score- I got 1370 on my powerprep. THANKS A TON TO ALL THE TM FORUM MEMBERS esp Vinay, Moizza, Ruby, Tania and ERIN, byee, Varun.

  7. 38. The issue comparing acquisition of knowledge through either the books or the television is a debatable one. On one hand, in the current age of the television, it is a source of information that is most readily available. On the other hand, books have been the tried and tested learning tool since time immemorial. I would support the view that both television and books can contribute to out learning process, with limitations possessed by each of them. In recent times, television is definitely the most popular source of entertainment and information. There has been a boom in the popularity of television and it occupies the living room of almost every household. It has become almost essential for life. It is readily available to common man at the comfort of his house. Educational channels like the Discovery Channel and National Geographic do provide a lot of information and knowledge about science. Also it has been shown that audio visual stimuli are retained by our memory for a longer time. So should we not use it for our learning? The eye strain and the ill health associated with watching television for long hours is well known. Some programs may even be harmful to the young viewers whose inquisitive mind is craving for answers to even questions that we take for granted. Further, in the age of commercialization, educational programs are not encouraged. The reason for this is that it would simply not attract as many viewers as some non-sensical TV soap opera filled with glitter and glamour. And of course, from a pragmatic point of view, preparing educational programs on television is a difficult process requiring lot of planning. Book is a man's best friend. They have been with us since the humans learned writing. They tell us about the history of the past ages. In recent times, the popular contention is that print is dead, but it is not so and never can be so. For recording information, and for retrieval or reference whenever required, books can be a very useful source. It can be used to disseminate information to people around the world. The only inconvenience would be to store and maintain the books- it may seem a daunting task but it is very much possible and can pass on information from one generation to the next. Some of the best literary works such as that of Shakespeare, Wordsworth can be recorded only in books. Even if one tries to make a movie out of it, it would be impossible to capture every move and emotion that the writer originally came up with. When a new scientific discovery or medical breakthrough is to be explained, books would be definitely a more comprehensive source of information. The details could be very well explained in them. It is a very practical means of exchanging ideas and information among the scientific community. Television also has its place in informing the people about the latest events and live coverage of incidents as they happen. This would help people to keep in touch with the latest happenings around the world. In conclusion, the recent times has seen a growing popularity in the television as a source of information. True that it serves the need of entertainment more, but nevertheless the audio-visual nature and easy accessibility makes it a very attractive source of information. Books also have its own place as they can be use to pass on knowledge to the future generations without losing the original touch and meaning that the author came up with. It would be best to strike a balance between the two in the quest for knowledge.
  8. 98. THe author asserts that Nadasept liquid antibacterial hand soap is to be supplied in the hospital to prevent serious patient infection. He provides evidence by quoting the laboratory study showing greater antibacterial effect of Nadasept and reporting about the apparent decline in patient infection on using Nadasept at the hospital in Saluda. The assumptions made by the author are not logically sound and have numerous flaws in them. Firstly, the author attributes the decreased rate of patient infection at the hosiptal in Saluda to use of Nadasept liquid hand soap. It cannot be assumed so. It could have been a practice and attitude of physicians and nursing staff in that hospital accounting for the decreased infection rate. Universal precautionary measures like gloves and disposable needles could have been increasingly provided at that hospital. Perhaps, the stuff being aware of the study would have been more apprehensive and careful in maintaining hygiene thus leading to bias in the study. It could also be the better ventilation system and wards for the patients- we just don't know. It would not be write to assume that success at one hospital can be translated to the others. The author assumes that since the lab study of the concentrated solution of Nadasept killed 40% more bacteria, it would be more useful. But is that concentration fit for human use in washing hands. It could lead to skin reactions and damage if very concentrated. Also the liquid soaps in use, might also achieve that bacteria killing power if adequately concentrated. True that bacteria is the common source of infection, but we are not told if Nadasept works on viruses like the AIDS and Hepatitis virus that are highly communicable. The author does not mention about the pragmatic issues related with the introduction of the Nadasept liquid soap in the hospital system. We do not know if it is readily available and affordable. It may be very expensive for the hospital. We just do not know regarding this. Also the author does not tell us about alternative methods to reduce patient infection such as better precautions in the ward- especially when undergoing surgical procedures and operations, better training of hospital staff, regular fumigation of the wards and numerous other viable methods. The argument can be strengthened and made more persuasive if it can be shown that Nadasept, at a concentration fit for human use, can achieve a greater antibacterial effect. Also mention has to be made about the feasibility of introducing the Nadasept liquid hand soap into the hospital system to prevent serious patient infection.
  9. CONGRADULATIONS DUDE!!

  12. 1. Dickens broader concerns are to be narrowed down- diminished or ignored. I would chose D diminished. Means Dickens social reformer role is to meet the same treatment as that of Carvers sketching of lives- in a narrow manner. 2.Contempt- means people criticize the whole medical profession, but when it comes to their personal docs, they decline to do so- they dont criticize them so openly , they dont treat the docs with contempt. Contempt- would mean the closest to criticize among the options. 3.I would chose between C & E- the second blank is more precise, so I would choose E. The guys have accepted the contemporary (modern day) forms of social behavior, hence if something is conflicting with the present age values- these guys would believe them to be redundant- means not required. I am still not very clear how plaintive fits in- whats the answer? You are posting nice questions- I will tell you one thing, if these are from the BgBook what you do is type the first few words on googlesearch and you will come across some website where someone has written it down, copy and paste so that you can save time and post more questions, Thanks.
  13. Hi, Prescience means to have knowledge beforehand, that is to know about the future- using this bridge, erudite (means scholarly) knows about the esoterica (the esoteric things- things known only to few). Does this sound plausible? Hope so.
