  1. I gotta correct this information. For GeorgeTown, University Fellowship is only 3K more than that of departmental assistanship, i.e. 20K/year. Vu
  2. Maatar, I have made up my mind and accept GeorgeTown's offer. That means I will certainly move to DC. Do you have any idea yet, regarding the housing? What school you gonna attend?
  3. The same here. I will most likely go to GeorgeTown. Keep in touch. Vu
  4. Yep, I got my BS and BA in Vietnam, MSc in Singapore, and finally MA in Texas. Do I know you? :hmm: Vu
  5. Hi Dym. How are you :) And what do u mean by this? U meant Hanoi? It's cool. That's perfectly true. I have some hassles squeezing some funding out of UCLA and they can't even guarantee the money beyond the first year for international students. Vu
  6. Thanks for your comment. I have already revised my post :) Vu
  7. GPA: 4.0 (MA) GRE: 770/800/4.5 TOEFL (if international student): 283 Publication: 4 (2 conferences & 2 journals) Seeking: PhD in Applied Linguistics Admits: Iowa State, GeorgeTown, UCLA, Ohio State, Uni at Buffalo Rejects: Rice If you can give us an advice, that should be: work on your SOP and check to make sure that some of the faculty share certain research interests with you (that's why I failed to get into Rice, they are mainly theoretical blokes while I wanna do something tech-applied) Vu
  8. Well, in your case, you'd better get your class ranking. For me, my BS GPA was around 3.2 (direct conversion from our scale to US scale), but since I ranked third in my year, that ranking does compensate for the GPA that seems very low for PhD applications. Vu
  9. Why do I only see econ and CS guys here? Where are linguistics or English guys? :p Anyone who applies to GeorgeTown or UCLA? Vu
  10. Nope, SD calculation is certainly not required for GRE Q, I believe as it's just a time-consuming no-brainer. Vu
  11. Thanks bnm and all other friends, who have helped me out. I do enjoy the course in Texas Tech. They offer a solid course in Applied Linguistics :) Well, I did the same thing. I spent weeks working on Verbal section, but only a few hours on AWA just to get familiar with its format and have some ideas about the strategies I would apply in dealing with them. I already recommend the best book (in my point of view) for preparing AWA in previous posts. I feel that, schools don't really pay much attention to this (Texas Austin doesn't even record it in my student file). This is my personnal impression and it may easily be over-generalized, but after all, there are like 6 points to fight for, compared with 800 points in V or Q. Well, different people find different words tough :) Again, thanks for your help. Those files are now available from my web site http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/vuho/ Please try to download them from there first. If you still have trouble with downloading, let me know and I will send you via email then. Rgs, Vu Ho
  12. Hi friends, I have started the research project on vocabulary learning, which aims at building a software that helps people to learn new words using association mechanism. It would be helpful in preparing GRE. Please spare a little time helping me out by response to my test questionnaire. Click on the follow link to access the questionnaire online: http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/vuho/Vocab/Quest1.html I appreciate your time and assistance. Good luck to all GRE test-taker. Vu :)
  13. Well, long time no see. My apology for replying ur messages so late. Since many have problem with downloading those files from geocities site, I'm now moving them to my personnal web site at Texas Tech. Just right-click on the link, and Save as. http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/vuho/ EEPhd, there is indeed a Vietnamese Guy in Coleman Hall, but it seems he is in Economics. I currently live in University Plaza and I like it there :) Well, the best way to learn vocab is extensive reading but it takes time. If you don't have much time right now, just jump on any software (like Guru) which would help you to memorize a bunch of words in a short term, although you may soon forget them after the test. Try to learn by association since to succeed in GRE test, knowing the word meaning alone is not enough. I have planned to write a Java-based GRE vocab development, in which I will represent a learner's current knowledge of GRE words as an associated network. It will test the learner on that and try to identify the weakest links in the built-up network, i.e. the words the learners are most likely to forget or misuse. Those weakest links will be used to test the learner again and again so that the link can be strengthened via repetition. If I can finish this project (if ever :), I will try it first here. Vu Ho
