  1. My educational background: I got two MS degrees (Structural and Mechanical Eng.). Have been working for over 13 years, so I am one of those guys who wake up late in their life and all of sudden think... Oh, I should get an MBA! (kind of like what Ursula did). As for the test prep, I believe OG is best book you can buy and GMATPrep is the best practice software you don't need to buy. :) I bought not only OG but also OG Verbal Workout, since I know that my weakness was (and still is) in verbal (I am not a native speaker -- as you probably can tell from my writing). PR is helpful in that it gives you a general sense of what GMAT is about. Their SC portion led me into the world of GMAT English. Kaplan gave a lot of hard verbal questions that are helpful too, but they can be very discouraging sometimes. I took advice from CTG and went through GMATPrep many times (thanks again CTG). I believe that helped me alot in preparing for the Quant, because the types of Quant questions in the real GMAT are very close to those in GMATPrep. My test score (glad that I have saved them): PowerPrep 1: 640 (w/o study) PowerPrep 2: 660 (two weeks after PP 1) PR CAT 1: 650 Kaplan CAT1: 650 Kaplan CAT2: 630 Kaplan CAT3: 720 Kaplan CAT4: 710 GMATPrep 1: 720 GMATPrep 2: 760 Over all, I have the same impression as many others have: GMATPrep score is quite an indicator of your real score. But I also have seen some that disagree. So I can only say that it does not apply to everyone.
  2. Gave GMAT yesterday. I don't know if I should feel happy or otherwise. I went with the hope of getting 740+, but I failed in that respect. On the other hand, I am feeling relieved that I did not stumble under 700 -- that would make my day even worse. Regardless of how I did, I am feeling that I owe this TM forum more than I can pay back for. I regret that I did not stumble on this site early enough, only in January this year I found this site. :smack: I want to thank Erin for providing this wonderful forum and giving many clear and concise answers to some very tricky questions. I also want to thank 800Bob for his brilliant solutions/clarifications to many questions. I am not here to give Oscar speech. ;) But I am also grateful to many forum participants, among them: CTG, chix, tictactoe, and of course spidey for his famous notes. :) Test experience: I booked the test a while ago and surveyed the site the day before the test to make sure that everything is in order (thanks to many who warned of test day surprises). My test should start at 9:00am, but I went there at 8:30am so that the paper work can finish in time without rush. I would recommend the same to future test takers. It really helped me calm down and get ready, although I did not have a good sleep the night before test day. The test started out with argument essay and then issue essay. I used the Kaplan templates for these. No issues there. Only thing annoying was the keyboard, the space key does not work unless pressed REALLY hard. That slows me down significantly. I asked the test center to fix/change it so future test takers can have one less problem. :) Quant part was definitely not harder than GMATPrep. I got a lot of number property questions and a few combination questions, but no probability questions -- that is odd. Timing on math was a little off, but not too bad with last question for 1:20 minutes. But I did realized that I made a mistake for question 30 after I clicked the confirm button. :blush: I screwed up verbal big time. Started off OK, at 25 minutes, I was at question 15. Then I kind of slowed unconsciously. thinking that I have a lot of time at hand. The next thing I know is I had 10 questions left and 17 minutes for them. Plus, I got a long RC passage at about Q 34. I had to rush through many of them without checking all the choices. I had only 34 seconds for the last question! I felt that I definetely missed 40 mark for the verbal at that point. Well, it turned out to be the case. So I would suggest to future test takers to check your time every 5-6 questions to control your pace, because it is VERY important. Hope this can help out somebody down the road. So much for now... Thanks TestMagic (Erin)! You rock!
  3. E is the best. Negating E would render the argument invalid (no other business would want to come to these regions).
  4. Arrived at A.:) If the vitamins absorbed by the fake fat are more than enough compensated by one's increased intake of vitamins, then there is no issue at all.
  5. Support C. B is out of scope. repelling other insects has nothing to do with this argument.
  6. I believe that it is not an easy question and I am glad that I arrived at E (in line with 800Bob). :) 800Bob makes the right and wrong very clear.:tup:
  7. It is D. Since ABD is an isosceles triangle (given AB = CO = BO) and so is COB. So /_ OCB = 2* /_ BAO. /_COD = /_ OCB + /_ OAB = 2* /_OAB + /_OAB = 3 */_OAB 1) So if we know /_COD, we know /_OAB. suff. 2) If we know /_BCO, then we know /_OCB (=/_OAB) as well. suff. Hence D. HTH.
  8. C provides the parallelism needed in describing animal ("found" and "resembling").
  9. Agree with yoda_ngen. There is nothing wrong with A.
  10. D is best. What we are looking for here is the parallel structure that completes "blending of solar imagery, Judeo-Christian thought and figures, and ...". Also we are looking to complete the sentence which in its orginal form lacks a verb. "suggests" is what we need. Among all the choices. D satisfies both.
  11. My inclination is C. E has "date of humans who ...", which makes my uncomfortable.:hmm: B is close, but it may be a little wordy.
  12. B should be the right choice. hikaru reasons well for the answer.
  13. Manish, I bleive you are right. The OA may have problem. 1) (1/y) > (1/x) . tells us nothing about the sign of x and/or y. Insuff. 2) x> 0. Nothing about y. Insuff. Combining: Since x > 0, we can translate (1/y) > (1/x) to (x/y) > 1 (no inequality sign change here). Therefore x/y > 0. So x and Y must be have the same sign => y > 0. Now we know that XY HTH.;)
